Title: Should be getting a TGP in the VERY near future.
Post by: ElGeeFived on February 02, 2008, 09:56:09 AM
Was at lunch, and saw one cruise by. FIRST ONE i've ever seen in real life, about creamed my pants at how freaking CLEAN this car was. I mean seriously, was in amazing shape. Underspoiler was still on and in straight condition. As i was touching myself watching it go by, i noticed the magic words on the back. "FOR SALE". So yea, needless to say i followed the guy around, got his number and stuff, headed back to work. Might get pics today if he can come to work. It's an older mexican guy and i know he doesn't use internet, so the only way he planned on selling it was by driving around with FS on the window. 80K on the clock. Man i'm freaking excited!

Not bad but I noticed a couple things:

1) Cigarette burns in the driver's seat?

2) That engine bay makes baby Jesus cry.

Overall, the paint looks amazing...almost a fire red/orange look from the pictures. How much?
Title: Re: Should be getting a TGP in the VERY near future.
Post by: ElGeeFived on February 04, 2008, 05:42:23 PM
it looks like something similar to cigarette burns. Pisses me off kinda, because if it weren't for that, that seat would damn near be perfect.
And yea diiiiirty ass engine bay.

$1800.
Title: Re: Should be getting a TGP in the VERY near future.
Post by: grinders_18 on February 04, 2008, 05:44:56 PM
If it runs good then for $1800, you should be able to look past the cig burns lol. Actually, wasn't there a product that was on TV a few years back that repairs leather and fabric rips? One of those Billy Mayes products.

haha yea. We sell some kits at o'reilly and such as well.
I'm not TOO worried about it, i'm happy i'm getting this car. The car is still producing boost as well. The only thing is it sounds like it's gotta bad lifter. But oh well. It's gonna sit for a while and get some work done to'er anyway, so replacing lifters will be on the list

No kidding though it's the nicest red 90 I've seen in person...It's also the ONLY red 90 I've seen in person, but Nick keeps his immaculate inside and out. Which is why Im hiring him as a full-time cleaner for my car this summer lol.

Post by: ElGeeFived on February 04, 2008, 06:03:12 PM
ya when i tore apart the 3.1 from the '92, it was still running great, but it was out, so why the fk not, right? It had been running perfectly fine...so i thought. One of the intake lobes was completely worn down and completely round, it just looked like another carrier that should've had bearings to hold it in the block  :icon_lol:

Actually that same issue occurs with alarming regularity on these cars, something you should definitely look into.
Title: Re: Should be getting a TGP in the VERY near future.
Post by: ElGeeFived on February 04, 2008, 06:12:09 PM
yea i'm aware of that. I'm VERY VERY VERY Familiar with the MPFI engines  :icon_mrgreen:

Seriously, in the town i was in when the '92 was a daily, anytime a 3.1 car came up to o'reilly they would call me up there to come inspect it and see what was wrong with it. 90% of the time i could figure out what it was over the phone by them telling me 2-3symptoms. I was ripping the thing apart on damn near a weekly basis. Well now that car, there's not ONE thing that isn't modified...seriously...lol. Some of ya'll i'm sure know about the doors. Now the floorpans, shit everything has been modified to some extent.

Post by: mfewtrail on February 04, 2008, 08:14:25 PM
Nice looking TGP. Did the previous owner mention whether or not that car has been repainted?

EDIT: I would listen to the car with a cheap stethoscope(I know you guys should have them at Oreillys). The injectors on the MPFI cars can be so damn loud sometimes that they sound almost like a ticking lifter.
Title: Re: Should be getting a TGP in the VERY near future.
Post by: ElGeeFived on February 04, 2008, 09:05:19 PM
thanks matt!

And yea, there's not really a ticking from the engine that i could hear. I mean there is, but yea, i'm used to it from the 3.1 i had before. But i can hear in the exhaust there's something that's off. I know it's common for 3.1's to smooth out a cam lobe and lose an injector or two. Since it'll be sitting i've got a few things i wanna do to it, mild cam and injectors and such.

Title: Re: Should be getting a TGP in the VERY near future.
Post by: grinders_18 on February 05, 2008, 05:13:04 AM
Yeah...strangely, I've seen many with the same horn in that same place. My first TGP had the same one mounted there, too. I've also seen the same and same in the picture section on turbograndprix.com.

My alarm horn is hidden under the black plastic covers behind the headlights.  Its smaller though.

hell yea! I was going to clean her up today and do a small tune-up, more of a diagnostic to see what's up with the idle, but then it started raining...FAIL.
Title: Re: Should be getting a TGP in the VERY near future.
Post by: grinders_18 on February 05, 2008, 07:56:18 PM
What's the idle problem? Can you describe it? LOL if you get bored tonight, read through "Grinders 18 Rolling Learning Thread" in the Problems and Solutions section and see if you can get a rough idea..

Just remember, the best way to keep a new TGP running great, is to do a full tune up, replacing all sensors. I learned the hard way.
Title: Re: Should be getting a TGP in the VERY near future.
Post by: ElGeeFived on February 05, 2008, 07:59:28 PM
Ya i've had a 3.1 before, i know it's different, but i can tell pretty generally things such as idle. Hell actually i can tell you ANY bolt size on ANY part of a 3.1 and the easiest way to get to ANY of them while it's still in the car. I still have the '92's block...hmmm....engine build time?
Title: Re: Should be getting a TGP in the VERY near future.
Post by: grinders_18 on February 05, 2008, 08:01:11 PM
Speaking of bolt sizes, I need two. The two little round bolts that hold the IAC sensor into place on the throttle body. What size are they? Yeah I'm serious too lol.

Very nice car!!

For your idling problem.....is the crossover original?  if it's original, I would replace it now, along with a complete tune up and a new chip.  You should be good to go then!
Title: Re: Should be getting a TGP in the VERY near future.
Post by: ElGeeFived on February 05, 2008, 10:52:21 PM
ya it's definitely original. But i'm actually thinking it's still in damn good shape. I mean even the turbo itself has DAMN near ZERO shaft play, and still puts out pretty good boost. But yea it's in the list for replacement. Just did plugs/wires, but the battery died in the process (cell is pretty much gone, just the hood light killed it) tried to jump it, but it's too dead.

But ya, crossover and chip are definitely on the list...incmoe taxes baby!

If you don't like the alarm horn just run an auto relay from the alarm system to the factory horn output.  Thats what I did on my gpse......

Thank you for the bolt size...now dos anyone know how to remove the two snapped bolts from the IAC housing without removing the throttle body lol?
Title: Re: Should be getting a TGP in the VERY near future.
Post by: ElGeeFived on February 06, 2008, 02:55:47 PM
Most auto parts stores have EZ outs that go pretty damn small. they're rated by size, sizes 1-5, and on the package is the corresponding drill bit size for it. Although i may have a good 3.1 TB laying around if you don't have any luck with that!

And yea, here's a list of stuff with the TGP.

Idled like shit. Replaced the ORIGINAL plugs/wires, and it helped out a LOT. But i know the crossover is fkd, so that's probably a big problem, seeing as it's not holding exhaust pressure for shit.

Work needed:
Crossover
Driver's window is off track
Speakers have static sounds
hood has hail dents
Battery (doh)
Sunroof needs either adjusting or replacement, i think the motor's on it's way out the door.

The GOOD
Antenna is fully functional
Turbo shaft has damn near ZERO shaft play, i'm talking it might be like, half a millimeter,if that, i mean there's virtually none, just a HAIR bit.
Lip spoiler is still there and in good shape, needs repaint
doorhandles work and feel great
interior is in great shape
louvers are in perfect shape
Paints in good shape

That's all i can really think of now. Just went and drove it for about a mile or two after plugs/wires. I had to charge the battery for a bit (by hooking up another car with jumper cables and letting it idle there for about 5 - 10 minutes...LOL)

Oh, and cobra..yea i don't like the alarm horn. Soo..i took it off. lol. I'll be moving it lower once i figure out how the alarm is wired and if it still works.
Title: Re: Should be getting a TGP in the VERY near future.
Post by: grinders_18 on February 06, 2008, 03:02:16 PM
The speaker noise may be related to the factory amplifier going bad...real common.

Thanks for the EZ out tip...I'll check out Advance here shortly.

Hey Grinders, my radio crackles a bit, where is the amp, is it in the radio and what do you do to fix it?
Title: Re: Should be getting a TGP in the VERY near future.
Post by: grinders_18 on February 06, 2008, 07:26:48 PM
If I remember correctly, it's been a while, its above the glovebox.

Just wire around it, cut before and after the box, and install wires where needed.

Does it whine at all or just crackle?

In my experience, both my TGP's had the same thing, and bypassing the amp fixed this.
Title: Re: Should be getting a TGP in the VERY near future.
Post by: mfewtrail on February 06, 2008, 10:56:16 PM
The amp is pretty much right inline with the driver's information center. Just look up behind that area and you'll see it.

Maybe it's just me, but every 1990 I've seen has the headlights sitting back just slightly than an 89...like the 89 lights sit right up front. Ok, I can't put it into words right, anyone know what I mean? Kinda like there's more space between the hood and lights and the front bumper and lights.

NICE, and yea i love my nikons. The reason i went nikon over anyone else, they've been around for YEARS, and you can take ANY of their SLR lenses, and put it on ANY of their SLR bases. Which is GREAT, because AAAAAAALLLL your money goes into lenses, then to want to upgrade your body...but oop! Can't use your old lenses! Canon's changed what, 6, 7 times now?

True that brother...that was the selling point for me too. That and this camera kicks as much, if not more, ass than Chuck Norris.
