is there any way in hell that a tranny from a 97 GTP would work with a 90 STE turbo?
may seem like a pipe dream, but was just curiouse cus i have a totaled 97 gtp, and a 90 ste that the tranny sux on
Not trying to jack your thread, but I'd like to add-on to your question:
What year vehicles will have the same drop in tranny as ours? Also, the bracket that holds the turbo on the tranny, is this available from GM or do you need to cut it off and weld it on?
I'm sorry, but I had a tranny question and want to make sure both of ours get answered. I don't believe the newer tranny will work due to it being electronically controlled.
You would have to relocate the turbo. If your x-over is original I would just go ahead and relocate it. Theres some axle swaping involved and you need to mod the trans brakets. The shifting can be handled with two switches.
You'd have to cut the turbo braket off or just fab one yourself (easier).
There are no "Bolt-in" trannies for the TGP, except TGP-specific ones. You can put others in, but they will require some modification to make work, and a regular vac controlled 4T60 will not be strong enough to handle the TGP's torque.
A newer tranny will bolt to our bellhousing.
What do you have to do for axles?
you'd have to use the 4t65/ HD axles or 4t60-e axles from a GTP or 3100 Grand prix. But you'd have to duble check yourself. Some 4t65 owners that swaped to the 4t65 HD reported they didn't need to swap axles :icon_confused: .
Any 4T60 up to the 1992 models will work, but will not function exactly like the stock TGP transaxle. I wouldn't count on any of them lasting long unless you drove the car without getting into boost. The NA transaxles would only be good for someone that needs a temporary fix.
EDIT: If anyone swaps in a 65-E HD transaxle, you're going to have to combine the 65-E HD inner portion of the axle with the TGP stock outer portion of the axles. This will work fine for most people. If your cars are lowered, you'll likely want to look into getting some custom length axles made for correct axle geometry(otherwise, the axles might pop out like some L67 swappers have experienced with lowered cars).

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but are you saying you can use the 4T65HD innerds (clutches, bands, etc.) in the TGP's 4T60 shell and it would work?
Kyle, that's not at all what I said. ;) I was referring to the drive axles only in my post. You have to disassemble the axles when doing a swap and combine your stock ones with the ones from the car the 65-E HD transaxle originally came in. The hubs on 1st gens and 2nd Gens are different, thus requiring the outer half of the drive axles to be the original/4T60 style.
Ok glad I got that straight...sorry for the confusion.

I talked to this guy some. He says he has some 4T60 trannys, and can build them for street, strip, or?
When I talked to him, he seems to know his shit, but was real vaque when I asked him some direct tranny questions about my car. He says he has heard that the TGP had some hardened internals, but he doesnt beleive it... Take it for what its worth. His prices arent bad..
what would be needed to control the shifting of the trans?
A 4L80 Trasmission Controll Modual with some prom tunning or some switches.
