I wanna do the lower mounts, O2 sensor, and plugs/wires/etc, focusing on getting things I can afford right now, prioritizing things I can't do later. I figure lower mounts, and O2 are a pain otherwise, but I want a list of things I should replace/check once I get it going, so that by summer time she'll be very well on her way to being a great car
-O2
-motor and tranny mounts
-plugs/wires
-fuel filter
-Tranny filter and such for new tranny
add to my list :icon_biggrin:
O2 sensor is cake on a TGP. on the top of the turbo.
I would do all four subframe mounts. Runs about $200 from GM dealer. Well worth it!
think about flushing the heater core, inspecting the steering rack/lines for leaks, possibly changing the o-rings on the evap core?
These are all things that I wish I hadn't had the absence of mind to look over when I did this!! :icon_lol:
Might change the crank sensor if it hasn't been done?
I agree on the sub frame bushings. They should be toast by now. I would also check that mostly steel heater hose that runs along the passenger side of the engine bay. Its not really hard to do with the engine in but is very easy when the engine is out. Ask Jimmy I asked him if we should do it and we didn't then the day we were putting the engine in it sprung a leak in it. rusted from the inside out.

Main thing keeping it from running when I first got it! :icon_mrgreen:
all good suggestions so far!
Curious, why do you say the O2 was such a pain to change? We only have one and it's mounted on top of the turbo, unless you either moved it to another location or thought there were two?
I was just going on the assumption that it was in a similar place compared to the Cutty. Apparently it's not, so that's better, since that one's a pain!
Nice! Yeah we got lucky I guess lol. So just how much work is it exactly to remove the old trans, and install a 5spd? Roughly a week? Less?

I dunno, but I hope to find out someday :icon_mrgreen: If things go as planned, Ken will come up friday and we'll start tearing it down, and hopefully saturday get the new tranny in and have it mostly buttoned up saturday night
I would also do steering rack and PS lines. If you have to spare change to do it I suggest. Kind of a pain in the ass with a motor in there.
psych0matt, can you please document your swap? I have two people, one of which is my girlfriend, pushing me to do a 5 speed swap, and I am learning to drive manual now so, I'll probably end up going that route, and I'd like a tutorial on it...preferably with pics if you can :icon_mrgreen: Atleast pics on where to cut for the clutch pedal, where to weld the turbo mounting bracket, and anything else that will be a pain.
Also, who is doing your chip? You will need it re-burned for the 5 speed, correct?
Now I'm running mine without the 5 speed burn for now, But yea, it would be a good Idea to do it while your swapping.
It took me roughly around 25 minutes to cut a square hole, out of a round hole, so that the master slave will fit. just keep
cutting and fitting until its a perfect fit.And as far as your turbo bracket, let me see if I can get the guy who welded mine up,
just simply copycat it.
So, I don't know where the assumption was made that I was swapping in a 5 speed, but I'm just putting in another auto :dunno:
I have all the 5 speed swap parts (minus the tranny itself) lined up, but I won't be trying to tackle that for a long while, when I have lots of time to mess with it. I'm moving back to michigan in may, so for now I just want it up and running correctly
Sorry man, I must be mixing up threads, I thought you were throwing a 5 speed in. My bad.
Jimmy, who burnt your chip? Also, I'd really appreciate if you could get ahold of the guy who made your bracket. Are you running a 282 or 284? Any differences really?
Jimmy has a fully rebuilt 282 in his TGP.
It took me and TGPvsTll almost 6 months to rebuild it and install it in the car, now mine you, that me and tim took our time, we was not in a rush. But someone on the site, said that him and another guy took just one weekend to do the whole install with no rebuild. so it is possible that two mechanically incline people could do this easily. but I had so many things that wanted to change, while I had the time and space. I could tell you, but I'm sure would take up the whole post

I did Jimmys bracket. A copy should fit but we made his to fit his with his crossover and such. His crossover has been repaired. I think there might be a picture of it in his 5 sp swap thread along with pictures of his 282 in pieces.

Jimmy I think at the most we had your car in my garage was maybe 4 weeks. We pulled it in last January or February we did many things to the car but yes a good weekend just a swap can be done. Didn't we rebuild the trans before pulling the car in? What took us so long was getting the parts we needed for the 282 rebuild. We had the basic parts but there was a front seal issue with the kit we found the crack in the case needed to order a fork and a few other parts from the dealer then failed at finding the correct shim for the preload of the differantial and had to make one. But the car wasn't there that long considering we worked all week and only worked on weekends if we had parts. we rebushed the cradle replaced the steel coolant line replaced some A/C lines replaced the oil pump and pulled the exhaust manifolds to wrap them. we roughed out the turbo support bracket one weekend welded it during the week and installed it the following weekend. Plus we had a bit of a time swapping the ABS tone wheels off the auto axles and getting them onto the 282 axles. You also spent a good bit of time doing things inside the car. Plus we did have other things to do on some of the weekends so it wasn't like we worked from dawn to dusk every weekend day. We also talk too much while working. But we did have a good time. Hey meet me out in my garage and we'll pull the charger apart.

Well, the engine is out with minimal line casualties (one or two, but nothing I don't have or can't get easy replacements). I need a new lower motor mount, and some stainless turbo bolts, but otherwise a good cleaning and to figure out what to do about the tranny is all she needs. I was going to swap in this spare, but since it'll be a few weeks til we can get another good weekend to work on it I want to perhaps rebuild one.
Does anyone know where I can get the TGP specific rebuild parts?
I would replace the heater core while the engine is out. That thing is a royal pain in the ass to do while the engine is in there.
perhaps. I need to make a list of things I need to replace/fix
Got the tranny off and both are sitting in the garage
-oil drive o-ring
-turbo bolts (stainless)
-clean everything imaginable
-fuel line o-rings
I'm sure I'll be adding more to the list, that's just what i had in my head
