Title: NEW Trans!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: grinders_18 on March 07, 2008, 08:11:15 PM
Ok, so I bought a trasnmission off a guy on the W-Body forum, a 4T60 TGP trans with 5,000 on the new rebuild. I bought it cheap, and had it shipped up here, where it arrived yesterday. Rizzo, the guy working on my transmission (Let me stress how much I trust this guy...I'd let him drive my TGP and never think twice), disassembled it yesterday to check everything thoroughly, and proceeded to install a shift kit and heavier duty torque convertor.

I just went by to check on it at 5:30 tonight, and they had the old one sitting on the side, the new one installed, and as he went to reinstall the crossmembers, he noticed the cradle bolts. SHOT. Probably wouldn't have lasted another 5 thousand miles. Thank God he caught it. So he called GM and they're sending them over at 9:30 am tomorrow morning. I gave him the NHTSA recall number on the cradle bolt recall, and he was not even aware of the recall, so freebie there lol.

By noon tomorrow, I should have a nice, new transmission in my baby and from then on, it's decent-er driving, with a few occasional races lol. That's it, though. Everything is fixed. Not a single thing left. And now I jinxed it lol. But after 2 years and 10 days, she's finally mechanically perfect.

Go to www.NHTSA.com and do a search for recalls and enter your year, make, model, and what the recall pertains to...in this case, suspension. There are two.

Thank you, and I take that as a compliment! I've worked very long and hard to get her back to spec, and then some. Finally paid off!

yea i already tired to whole NHTSA thing and tried through GM and stuff, and the Turbo GPs vin V is not covered in the recall according to GM person i talked to, and my cars from Michigan!

Here's my thought on that, Pro...1989 TGP's have the Vin V, also, but when you Carfax them, Grand Prix SE comes up. When you Carfax the 1990's, McLaren Grand Prix shows up...they probably won't honor the 90 because it's not a recognized trim level, like the SE.

Thats BS.  They should honor it no matter what.

Thats what i think too but who knows, i gave them the vin for my 90 and they said they show nothing, that was a couple weeks ago, if i can get proof of the recall maybe that would help. is there anyway i could get part numbers on those bushings??

The bushings part numbers are on this forum...search for cradle bolt recall and see what comes up; also provide them with the recall data from www.nhtsa.com

That sucks serious ass, I remember back in the day when not GM but Pontiac would stand up for you in any situation. Boy has time changed :icon_rolleyes:

If you're replacing them on your own, the part numbers are among the GP parts pages that I scanned(in the stickied thread in the general section). I think all the parts together are around $150ish from a dealership. GMPP or some other place should be cheaper, but it make take forever to get them(through GMPP anyways).

I paid 199 for everything from a GM dealer in upper NY state.. Beat the $350 they wanted at a local dealership in Canada.

When we put the turbo in my SE we noticed it has the new subframe bushings and retainers installed.....for once I got a car that someone actually cared about! :icon_eek:
