Title: Rebuilding a Cluster (KAZ)
Post by: pontiac6ksteawd on March 23, 2008, 01:17:27 AM
I am wondering if there is anyone we can send our cluster to, to get them rebuilt. Mine has the low fuel issue sometimes, and a boost guage issue.

I was also wondering if KazMotorsports was going to think about getting into this? I know I have one, and there are other members out there that probly have the same issues.

How much did it cost to repair it?

I wanna say about 200 dollars but I don't exactly remember. they went through and check the accuracy of all my gauges but the speedo is still off from the hud by about 4 mph at 60 mph. I work for gm and when these cars were new I had the oppurtunity to drive them and I noticed that the huds were right on but the speedo read a little high.

my boost gauge wont actually go over 0psi, when it is actually moving around. otherwise it doesn't work at all.
also my fuel gauge says I'm on empty and the gas light is on.....but I just put like 4 or 5 gallons in the tank a few days ago.

And if you are unskilled with a soldering iron like myself you can just pull the bulbs out and be done with it :)

but it would still come up on the hud too wouldn't it regardless of if the bulbs were there?

I dunno I don't have the low fuel wire hooked up on my hud because my car had that digital solid state cluster and the gas light would flash on and off sometimes when I shifted so I unhooked it.  Really guys if you want to fix these clusters cheep your best bet is to start going to the pick a part and getting clusters from like a 92 or 93 w body and swapping them in until you get one that works.  Then you will have to swap the face plate off the cluster and use the back half of the one that works and do some wiring to get your boost gauge to work.  It is not that bad once you start doing it,  hell I'm on my 1, 2, 3, 4, wow 5th cluster swap and I'm finally happy.  I took the back half from a rebuilt 92 cluster and put the tgp face on and recalibrated the boost gauge to read battery voltage......but that is just mine.

HEY! do u have any idea what may fix those digital style clusters in a 88 GPLE that just doesnt rear a speed, its blank, but if you hit the dash it will come back breifly as the correct speed but go off again.

Loose electrical connection?

No offense guys, but as busy as I am in the shop taking on something else with minimal payback would not work for me. As Prospeeder showed the the link to fixing it yourself...it is pretty easy to do. Worst part is getting all the varnish protecting skin off the cluster backing before you try to solder it.

No easy fix.....the digital clusters look nice but rarely work.......so my advice is to get an anolog one that works from the pick a part.  Sorry but everyone but us have forgotten about these cars.........

If you guys just need the analog cluster soldered, I would do it for ya.  That would fix the false low-fuel light and check gauges light, but it would not make the gauges any more accurate.

Problem is, that the page shown there fixes the check guages, and lights. I have a boost guage issue. So thats what I am trying to fix..
