Title: New Muffler Help
Post by: grinders_18 on April 06, 2008, 12:32:18 PM
Ok, so I like the sound of my Raptor mufflers, but I want to go with something slightly louder and more throatier sounding...something with a muscle car sound.

I currently have no cat, and I can't picture what the car would sound like with other mufflers, so I'm asking the pros here for your help. What would sound good, without getting me a ticket for noise violations?

I have Borla mufflers on my 99GTP and it sounds great

I've been thinking about saving them for the next Mclaren...

because I know they'd sound friggen awsome!!!!

If you want loud and muscle sounding put a cherry bomb on and open up the exhaust to 2.5 if you haven't already...doubtful considering your overkilledness to detail  ;)

LOL Cherry bombs are TOO loud...no cat on the car.

And until I decide to upgrade the turbo setup, I'm sticking with stock exhaust...breathes well enough right now.

Nah I've never liked the sound of Borlas...nothing personal. Just that around here, half the cars run Borla, the other half run fartcans. And after a while, they start to sound alike lol.

Catless stock exhaust sounds pretty good. That's what's on the red car. It's got a bit of a rumble to it @ normal throttle levels and gets pretty quiet under hard acceleration.

See, i had stock rotted exhaust and no cat, and it still didn't sound right. I want the muscle car sound.

Hooker Aerochambers sound the best or a 60 degree v6.  Or check out Mac Performance their stuff sounds good.  I'm not a big fan of the magnaflow stuff......

Hey cobracmdr, I checked online but can't find a site that has an audio clip of the Hooker Aerochamber mufflers...any chance you'd have a link?

It will quieten things down + give it a better tone.  You're not really going to get a "muscle car" sound from these cars. Both of my TGP's with different setups get pretty quiet at higher throttle levels. I'll have to record a new video of my naturally aspirated 3.1 for you, it has a nice rumble to it when driving normal, but you can tell it's a V6 as soon as you get on the gas. I have a 30series flowmaster(large case, three chamber) mounted where the cat used to be and I also have a dynomax bullet on it before the y-pipe. The bullet is pretty much acting as a resonator and quietening the exhaust. Before I just had the flowmaster and nothing else and the car was REALLY loud, you could literally hear it from over a mile away. After adding the bullet it cut down the sound probably about 40-50%...and it's still decently loud. The NA 3.1's sound a little bit different since they have no turbo to muffle the sound.

Yeah I won't have a video...no video camera and my camera doesn't double as a video camera.

But it does take professional 10.2 megapixel pictures!

Dynomax Ultraflo FTW.  i think they might be the same as the Magnaflow but i'm not sure.  whatever you do, don't get a chambered muffler.

Someone should really put a section to this website titled exhaust sounds so people can post vids of the exhaust combos they have.  At least that is what we do in the mustang community this way people can hear a combo before they buy mufflers.  I would recommend some others but I don't know how they will sound with the muffling of the turbo.  I think right now I'm going to run a glass pack before the y pipe and then straight pipe from there.  Or i'm going to keep the stock exhaust and get an electric exhaust cuttout installed and run no exhaust during street races.....I mean at the track;)
