Title: New Turbo for the TGPSE! PICS
Post by: cobracmdr on April 18, 2008, 09:55:41 AM
New turbo arrived and is installed!  Now I just need a new crossover pipe.  This one had been rebuilt but apparently not well, my long sought after exhaust leak has been identified now that I deleted the EGR and could get my hand near the rear exhaust manifold ball and socket joint.  The crossover was made a touch too long and is leaking at the rear joint right behind where the egr tube was before that I could never quite reach!  Oh well one thing at a time right?

Even with the exhaust leak the turbo is amazing.  There is so much top end now it is not even funny, it pulls and builds boost all the way to redline.  No spikes just pure power.  This thing is coming along nicely:)  Track times coming soon after I get the new crossover and car retuned.  Stay tuned on with the pictures!

WOW Ken your car looks great!!! I just read your post on 60 degree V6 and your car has come a long way. Thats a sweet low mileage GP. I hope you enjoy your new hair dryer and it was a pleasure working with you.. Fitting that exhaust housing with that super large turbine shaft was a PITA but I think you are going to enjoy it..  ;)  Good luck and let me know when you are ready to finish up the tune.   :icon_mrgreen:    later

Thanks guys it has been a lot of work!  I definately can not claim I did it all myself I had lots of help.  First off my best friend on 60degreev6 Lorenzo (Gpse3400) for helping me source and figure out everything to the last nut and bolt I needed to do this.  Second my neighbor Pete who did all the chrome powder coating for me for free!  I owe him a full Ken detail on his wife's car.  My machinists at work for all the bolts they extracted from the turbine housings I brought in, for machining down my crossover flange making it flat, Duane for letting me use his bead blaster to clean all these junk yard parts up.  Adam, man I owe you not only for the tuning help but also for building that turbo for me......that thing is amazing and it is getting better and better I can't wait to get some numbers on this beast.  I'll be doing some logging this weekend as I fixed the crossover leak with my trick;)  Last but not least my girlfriend Donna for putting up with me constantly working on this thing for the last 4 months and for keeping me well fed:)

FYI The guys over on SVTperformance love the car.  Check it out!

I never saw the pictures of your car with the xlaces on. They look huge without the TGP fender flares. :icon_eek: I'm surprised so many of those guys actually had positive comments...I think it's only because you also own a Terminator. ;)

My neighbor is a very nice guy and did them for free :)  He did tell me if I was to pay for them somewhere else would run me 350-400 bucks.

Thanks!

Soooooo, when are you hitting the track? ;) I'm curious to see what kind of trap speeds you'll get out of that setup.

Once Adam and I work out a few more bugs and get it tuned for 12 psi on the street.  Track will be 14 psi......next week or two I suspect as long as I stop breaking the damn thing!

UPDATE:  Ok we have been doing a lot of tuning and this thing is getting fast as hell now!  I surprised myself earlier today when I powershifted 1-2 and the thing spun the front tires.  I'm sure you guys are like yeah big deal......well the tires on the car are cooper zeon zpt's 245/50/16! Thats a big chunk of tire to break free!

Anyways I fixed the exhaust leak, turned out to be the rear crossover ball and socket joint was warped from years of use so I got some of this stuff below called thermosteel from autozone for like $6.99.  I loosened the joint, stuffed the goopy mixture in there, tightened it up, smeared some around the outside and let it sit overnight.  Start the car up and let it idle for a few minutes to finish the cure and no more leaky crossover ;)  I had tried to tighten the rear flange to make it stop leaking, even tried copper shims, I tightened it so much I broke the damn stud off the rear exhaust manifold.  Luckly I had a spare rear manifold for a turbo grand prix in the garage with good studs and it only cost me 1.5 hours work to change it and put in a new gasket.

Otherwise I have been busy tidying up the engine compartment.  I made a EGR blockooff plate out of some 300 series stainless at work and used a copper flare pipe cap to block off the crossover pipe where the egr pipe was.  I just won and auction on ebay for a combo EGT/Boost gauge and I'm going to mount the thermocouple for the EGP where this cap is.

I have also been doing a lot of heat shielding.  Let me tell you thermotech works!  That reflective wrap really cut down the charge pipe temp and the header wrap around the turbo and downpipe really helped as well.  Enough talk enjoy the pics at the park near my house and of the updates!
