Title: TGPSE 1/4 Mile Results!
Post by: cobracmdr on June 02, 2008, 06:11:35 AM
Well Larry (GPSE3400) and I hit Island Dragway in NJ today!  What a great day for it, since it rained all day Saturday they were only running cars with street tires since water was creeping out of the cracks in the track.  So unlimited runs ( I got like 9 in a 4 hour period) and no wait.  So here are the results, mods in my sig.  Yeah the car is silent!  I'm running a stock 88 SE exhaust still, I'm getting an exhaust built this weekend for it.  I'm running like 12 psi on a semi DIY tune that Flybynite and I made.

This guy trailered in this camaro, he beat me but I think his pride was hurt a bit by this launch )
Best Run: 14.556 @ 93.75 MPH

(http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa43/hoffmk2003/th_100_6154_1456.jpg) (http://s196.photobucket.com/albums/aa43/hoffmk2003/?action=view&current=100_6154_1456.flv)

This was against a turbo civic with no interior, he said he was running 14s but I saw him run a 13.85 so I knew what to expect, needless to say he was surprised by the TGPSE with full interior and a full tank of gas!  He did not catch me until after the 1/8 mile.  He gave lots of respect to the "grandma car" as he called it :)

Second Best Run: 14.6 Flat @ 93.43 MPH

(http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa43/hoffmk2003/th_100_6158_146_TurboCivic.jpg) (http://s196.photobucket.com/albums/aa43/hoffmk2003/?action=view&current=100_6158_146_TurboCivic.flv)

Most of the sixty foots were in the 2.12 -2.13 range.   Not bad for the first time in the 1/4 with this car, oh yeah it is only a little 2.8

Nice runs!! Bet a lot of guys weren't expecting those runs out of your car.

I actually went to my local track on Sunday as well.

Sounds like your camera man was snoring or something

Yeah I surprised a lot of guys with that setup, they wanted  to know if it was a 3800 supercharged......I was like no 2.8 Turbo :)  Yeah my exhaust is holding me back bigtime I think.  My camera man had some allergies I think

Not bad, but I really expected your car to trap considerably higher than that with the upgraded turbo. ;) What exhaust setup are you running? What rpm are you shifting?  Also, what time was it when you made your best run?(I'm going to calculate the density altitude for that run).

Hmm, how should I add you to the 1/4 mile list?  I guess I'll have to make a "2.8 liter" section. ;)

EDIT: Nevermind on the exhaust! I see that in the first post. Are you still running a cat? If the SE exhaust is similar to the stock TGP exhaust, then you shouldn't have a problem with it if you're running catless. Josh(TurboSedan)'s former Cutlass put down ~230whp on a Dyno Dynamics Dyno after Kenny tuned it(probably equivalent to ~260whp on a dynojet, as his car had already dyno'd around 230whp on a dynojet BEFORE Kenny tuned it)

Exhaust: Stock 88 SE (goes in the right muffler and out over to the left one, sucks for flow)
RPM Shifting at: 5500
Best run was around noonish in Great Meadows, NJ.

Don't read to much into the time, I had wheelspin out of the hole and I can't seem to get more than 12 psi out of the turbo right now due to the exhaust restriction.

I'm getting a 2.5 inch exhaust built on Friday with no mufflers.  That should help out a bunch :)

Added your time to the list under your very own section. You're at the very bottom of the page. ;) I really need to revamp the 1/4 mile page one of these days...just about anything would be better than the current version that looks like it's from the early days of the internet.

Hahah yeah the SE exhaust flows probably about half as good as a tgp exhaust since I basically only have one exhaust pipe at 2.25 inches.

Well I found out my oil pump screen fell off the pump sooooooo the engine is on it's way out.  While it is out I'm putting in a nice little turbo cam, new lifters and LS1 Valve springs.  I will then get the exhaust made and hit the track again with a lot more top end powa!

Here is the REAL Slip

R/T     .163
60'      2.130
330     6.069
1/8     9.337
MPH    75.62
1000    12.147
1/4       14.566
MPH      93.23

Just the screen fell off or the pick up tube it self fall off?

Wish I could tell you I'm guessing the whole pickup tube and screen fell off.  Eitherway I have to open up the pan to see what is going on in there.  I have a use TGP pump I can throw in if I get into a bind.  The pump was a brand new Melling with a Melling screen.  Funny thing is the screen and tube pressed in nice and tight.  I'm tack welding it in place this time.  Flybynite said he had this exact thing happen on his red TGP.

I should know tonight, I will post pictures once I get the engine out (all I have left to take off is the downpipe, AC compressor, a few connectors, shift cable hold down and front motor mount......wow that sounds like a lot.  Everything on top is disconnected already.

Dude that's awsome, I would love to see it sometime. I may be going to PA next weekend to get some fireworks, and I go right through Binghampton on 81 to the store I go to.

Very nice, man.  I would love to do a build like that someday.

Looks good Ken. Lots of work for a weekend project. All this work with you has given me the need for speed so I bought a GT3071R BB turbo. Should be here in a few days... pretty sure it will go on the black TGP with a few other mods.... :icon_biggrin:

!!!!!!!!!!!!That rocks Adam.  Totally thanks for your help and advice.  Hey I took that shot of the turbo to show your the clearance, how does it look?  How did those mains look?  Pretty bad eh?

I thought the black car was supposed to be your dd and not modified ;)  Shh just don't tell the gf she will never know!  I'm sure that black car will be crazy fast with that turbo and your tuning.

It was a ton of work I started pulling the engine last Tuesday after work and had it out Thrusday night only working a few hours a night.  I built the bottom end Friday night, Top end Saturday and had it in the car Saturday night.  Sunday was lining up the front mount and connecting everything.....Monday was troubleshooting code 33 and tuning for the cam......and washing the car to get all my greasy prints off.

Meltboy you got my number right?  I'll be in town this weekend so give me a call, if you come by Saturday we can go to the local cruise in at the town square mall and show off the cars.  Usually happens around 5 pm.

Mfewtrail yeah I was running a stock 2.8 cam.  This cam does not have that lopey idle thing going on, I can hear a little bit but I still have that stock SE exhaust!  I feel like the car has more top end but I have not ran it over 3500 rpms since the motor only has 75 miles on it since the rebuild.  I'll find out for sure in a few hundered miles.

Thanks for the support guys.......it was a lot of work.....but I'm glad it all went together with no major problems.  It actually only had that one bug *crosses fingers*

jebus that was fast. It's been a month and I still haven't finished replacing my oil pan gasket  Good 1/4 time too! I can't wait to finish debugging my car and actually getting a chance to drive it and get real times.
