Title: How do you adjust the brake light switch?
Post by: killinprixs on June 13, 2008, 12:39:24 PM
Seems like this is a common problem, the brake lights stay on unless you pull the pedal back, how do you adjust the brake switch?  I saw 2 clips holding it up but i dont understand how to adjust it, i would buy a new one but i dont think i need to.

I used to know how when I had my 89 cutlass international.........I think you have to pull the metal tab or something.

we had to do this to Jimmys I believe there is a metal clip on the back side (firewall side) of the switch. Use a paper clip or something to pull it away from the switch and the internals of the switch will rachet into proper adjustment then just release the paper clip. If you have small hands you might be able to reach it. If it doesn't adjust or keeps doing it again replace the switch.

do a search on w-body, I've done detailed posts on this. i've explained it the best I could, it's very difficult to understand unless you have it in your hands and out of the car, and even then you might have to think about it. took me forever to figure it out back when I had my TGP.

buying a new one will do you no good, since you'll still have to adjust it.

All I remember about it the most ,was that we were doing it backwards. Instead of pulling down, you need to push it up to Adjust it right
Title: Brake Switch Stop Sensor replacement. PLEASE HELP
Post by: dkorinko on June 18, 2008, 09:56:17 PM
So im not sure exactly what you call it, but the thing at the top of the brake pedal that tells the brake lights when to come on and when to shut off is messed up. When I press the brakes the brake lights come on normally but then when i lift my foot from the pedal the lights stay on, i am having to put my foot behind the pedal and pull it back towards me every time i want the brake lights to come off, which is getting really annoying!!! Anyways, I got the part from a local store to replace it and it doesnt look like its the right part.... I was wondering if anyone else has had to replace this piece and might be able to help me? Maybe someone out there has the right part number because the unit I was given doesnt look like its the right one... any advice would be appreciated!!!!

Dane, read Tony's(GutlessSupreme) posts on this thread: http://www.w-body.com/forum/index.php?topic=23484.0  Your sensor is probably just out of adjustment, it seems to be a very common issue on TGP's.

Thanks for the info... turns out I was retarded, I had the right switch the entire time, I must have just been looking at it wrong or something??? I had a buddy of mine who has swapped the switch out before do it for me. It literally only took him 10 min to crawl under there, remove the old one and put the new one in. :)
