will 1.6 rockers and 3400 heads work with a mild crane cam in the 3.1 TGP motor?
or would I have to remove the rockers because the lift was to high?
or use doubled up gaskets on the valve covers?
thanks!!
It will work just fine, just double check the clearance between retainer and valve seal. You may have to go to a shorter valve seal or modify the retainer, but you probably won't even need to do that.
Not sure what crane cam you are talking about, but I know that with my 3100 heads w/LS1 springs/retainers that I have enough clearance for 1.6's on my h-260-2 cam.

I see, good to know.
yeah the plan is to either do the full 3400 top swap on the 3.1 TGP motor, or swap it out completely for the 3400 block and put the TGP crank in it.

Why would you put the 3.1 crank in it? It is no stronger than the 3400 crank plus if you do that you will change the stroke and need to get pistons with different wristpin heights I think?
The 3.1 crank might have had tighter tolerances on it when machined......that is it. It is not like it is forged steel or anything......still a cast iron crank.

Swapping cranks is pointless. Either do the 3400 top swap, or do the complete 3400 swap. The cranks in the Turbo engines aren't any better than the 3400 crank.

Actually its the same stroke, 3400 just has larger bore than the 3.1, 2.8 is the one with the shorter stroke. Still pointless though.
I was under the impression that the 3.1, 3100 and 3400 were all essentially the same bottom end, just different top end...??
I know the 2.8 is smaller bore and shorter stroke.

the TGP 3.1 motor has a different Crank.
NO, the stroke doesn't change, only the bore.
you can get aftermarket kits to stroke the motor though, but buying a whole motor ends up being cheaper in the long run because you can sell the parts you dont need. $$$ :icon_mrgreen:
The TGP MAY have a different crank (I have yet to actually been proven this), but its not any stronger than the crank in the 3400 and is not worth your time switching them out. I'll give you big props if u break the 3400 crank. You'll throw rods and chip pistons before you even put a scratch in that crank.

Jeff M has a write aup about the differences in the motors on w body, here's the link: http://www.w-body.com/forum/index.php?topic=12387.0

Exactly....you will NOT mess up the crank....especially if you don't plan on doing a real tune on the ECM. If you plan on running straight TGP code you'll melt the pistons before you get to messing up the crank.....do a 3400 motor....full out..lots of ppl are doing this in Cavaliers with no problems.....
Yeah Jeff M. Says so
the 3.1 tgp crank is the same as a na 3.1 for our purposes.
The 2.8 is the same bore just different stroke and wristpin height on the piston. Do a 3400 swap or top end and be done with it.

so complete 3400 motor swap, or 3400 top end swap with the 3.1 TGP motor?
if I went with the whole 3400 motor, I'd do OBD2 and put the 6-speed G6 trans in. cuz I know of one for sale online for $400 BRAND NEW!!!
should I stick with the OBD1 or do complete overhaul to OBD2?
if I did OBD2, I'd go with the 4T65E HD 2004 GTP trans,
or the G6 with upgraded Diff and a stage 3 or 4 clutch.
I'd prefer to stick with simple for now though....

Jud did an actual comparison of the TGP vs. NA cranks before, here's a quote: "By the way I am running a N/A crank the one with the little gap between the reluctor ring notches. No problems yet. :D I never could find any differenc in the cranks other than the reluctor ring. It's maybe a degree different."

The G6 trannies mount in the cradle very differently from our 4T60's. You would likely have to fab up your own cradle, which would be quite the job! :icon_eek:

I know it's different, but not too bad. all it would require is a custom mount.
Kuntzie talked me into a Getrag 284 with stage 5 clutch. it handles the power perfectly and he's been drivng it for over 25000 miles with no problems.

1st- 3400 heads all have 1.6 rockers stock.
2nd- you'd need custom length pushrods if doing the 3400 topend swap and you should match them to the cam you're using as well.
3rd- as everyone else said, cranks are hardly the weak spot on any of the 60* motors and it would be pointless to swap.
now swapping an entire 3400 is a different story.. you're basically starting from scratch.
Forcedfirebird on 60v6 used gen 2 pushrods with flat tappet and gen 3 heads.

I think it would be best to just do the top swap for now instead of a complete swap.
I'll have more money left over for the body work and suspension
