Title: engine stumbles at high rpm
Post by: dogginred90 on August 04, 2008, 02:37:37 PM
Hey guys, I was wodering if you could shed some light on a problem my cousin and I have.  Our 3.1 turbo 5spd sputters and coughs only in 3rd-4th gear between 3000 and 4000 rpm. Any idea of the cause of this.

                                                      Thanks in advance!!!

Got a log file?  Whats the BLM or WB say at that condition?  Sounds like too much fuel I think I had a similar problem.......or else it could be........the elusive.....and ever annoying.......always ready to fail in the weirdest of ways.......igition module....

When you data log the car with a laptop one of the fueling parameters is called the BLM or block learn mode (I think) you want it to be at 128 which is equivalent to 14.7 air fuel ratio.   Basically you need a scan tool or something to diagnose this problem, you probably need to do some fine tuning if it is not a perfect 5 speed chip.  WB is not warner brothers it is wide band air fuel reading.  I wise I could give you more advice but unless you have more info that is all I got.  Did it just start doing this or has it been this way since some kind of mod, 5 speed swap, new injectors, bigger turbo etc..???

yea 3rd and 4th you can notice tuneup symptoms easier like injectors, ignition like cobra said... have you checked the ecm for codes with flash method?

it was after the 5spd swap.  The chip is hot tune from kenny.  what software would I need for a laptop.  The only code it trows is 24.

This should get you started.  But I would talk to Kenny about it too.

Hm thats good there arent any other codes except VSS,   I know injectors go bad on these cars and dont throw codes... are yours original ?  Anything else i can think of would probably throw a code except maybe an intemittent coil pack ? let us know how you do.

my injectors are original as far as I know,  and yes I will let you guys know what comes of this issue.

                                            Thanks for the know how

P.S.          If anybody can think of anything else,  Let me know

I experienced a similar issue when I would give three quarter throttle or higher (wot) from a dead stop or from a roll.  Mine was a tune issue.  You could see black smoke puffing out back when it "sputtered"  Although mine was after all the upgrades and an initial rich tune.
I still get it under WOT, but I am working on it.  I noticed some knock counts too which was probably from all the fuel.

Was the tune you bought from Kenny a true 5 speed bin. If it was for an auto, that could be your problem...

Yes it is a true 5 speed bin done by Kenny. We have a couple of ICM's laying around we will have to try them, and a few(12) coils that we can try. Plus we have another stock set of injectors from my other TGP that worked fine when I took them out. Thanks guys.

Are the plugs gapped to 0.028?

How old are the plug wires?

If someone is following you do they see puffs of black smoke?

Injectors clean and showing 12.0-12.5 Ohms each?

hey guys, I took your advice and changed the coil packs and modual.  The plug wires were aabout 3 years old so I replaced them too.  The problem is gone, and is running wickedly fast at 10.5 lbs.

you guys rock  thanks for the help

I thought the module itself either works or it doesnt, car probly just needed packs and tune up and would have been fine... ive never had one fail but replaced it anyway : )

funny my module always fucks up but the coil are good, I reuse the coils and swap out the module.  The module will make the car do strange things.........one time at WOT only in 3rd or 4th gear around 5k rpms it would fire the wrong cylinders and detonate like motherfucker........the car would lose 10mph at 60  mph instantly.  Scary stuff, but boy are these motors tough!  It that was a 4 banger it would have sent a rod through the block!

Module sucks if I have another bad one I'm buying a new one from GM!

I think mine tooks the shits today.  Tach turns off and starts bouncing around when it backfires and sputters. MF  :icon_evil:

NO WAY,  on my stock tuned car, i get some pretty loud detonation when i have the boost controller up too high and i run the car at 95% throttle just messing around, but the other day i had the boost set way too high for the stock tune , hit boost cut at redline.... the loudest backfire ive ever heard outta this thing , i let off it,  it coughed , the tach dropped for a second, sputtered and continued to run... i was amazed i had 6 pistons... do you have any knocks or does it have a dead cylinder now?

Well messed with mine again, still did back fire. I changed the map sensor and it went away.  :icon_confused: . Bad sensor I guess. I'm still going to replace the crank trigger, wire and ICM.

Hope everything going well for you doggingred90
