Title: ABS light blinks
Post by: MechTGP on October 18, 2008, 08:57:05 AM
Hey guys my ABS light blinks on and off all the time... my pedal feels a little stiff and when i hit the break hard my car drops RPM quite a bit at idle and the brake light flashes on. also would this be related ot my speedo being WAY off only sometimes aswell as my oil pressure guage.

The gauges being off is a seperate issue from your ABS light coming on. The gauges themselves are not accurate from factory, but the ABS light has something to do with your PowerMaster III braking system. I hope someone else will chime in about what could be his brake problem.

The speedo, oil pressure gauge, etc. are off due to other issues. The speedometers on almost every TGP are off to some degree. ;)

As for the ABS, a blinking light typically means the accumulator(nitrogen pressurized ball that sits under the master cylinder) has a low charge and needs to be replaced. If the accumulator has a low charge, the powermaster brake unit will run more often. It will eventually get to where it will run everytime you press the pedal. A charged accumulator should yield between 3-5 pedal presses before the pump cycles on.

When i turn the car on for the first time in the morning it takes a few pumps for the light to come on. and the ABS works against me every time i push the pedal after that. how would i go about fixing this? do i need a new booster or master cylinder or something? or just that one thing?

How is the best way to check the code for the blinking abs light to be sure its the accumulator?

If the pump cycles every time you press the pedal, your accumulator is bad.  If the accumulator is good, the pump should run every 3-5 presses of the brake pedal.

Find a factory scan tool(Tech I or the like) or one of the few aftermarket ones that will read codes from the powermaster setup.
