Title: Bad boost spike
Post by: balkyrollsinred89 on November 21, 2008, 02:53:10 PM
Unable to figure out the problem with my boost spike problem. So if i ease into it, it boosts the 8psi i have it set at. If i give it everything and hold it the boost jumps up to 11psi and hits the fuel cut out. It stops doing it when i turn the boost down to approx 3 to 4. it just doesnt seem right. Anybody got an idea of what i'm doing wrong?

Yeah, you're trying to make the computer do more work than it can handle.  You need a professionally tuned chip and go through the engine for regular maintenance.

Keep over boosting and bouncing off the fuel cut and the engine will eventually fail.

Thats whats i was thinkin. about the engine failing anyway. guess it may be time to start drivin the truck and start tearin it down. although i dont really want to. its only got 87000 on it. but i guess its a now or later type thing

What boost gauge are you going by? Is the stock boost control solenoid still being used in conjunction with your manual boost controller? Stock or aftermarket chip?

aftermarket guage. stock controller is bypassed. just a manual boost controller. stock tuning

On the stock chip, fuel cut occurs right around 9-9.5psi(I'd have to look to give you an exact number) for what it's worth. ;)

Got it taken care of. Just drilled out the fittings a tad on the boost controller and a new spring. Now she holds 8psi solid. Little dissapointed with the est 1/4 mile time of 16.03 at 85mph with peak wheel horse around 130. That  made up my mind to start the tear down for supporting mods and a bigger turbo. This could get interesting. Hopefully it all works out.

Are you using a cheap accelerometer for those estimates? ANY stock TGP in good running condition is capable of 15 second 1/4 mile passes unless you're at a really high elevation or run in really bad weather conditions. With proper tuning, you can make a TGP considerably quicker on the stock turbocharger.

By the way, you might be able to run faster at the track with the stock boost controller. The manual boost controller is going to give you instant spool and cause lots of traction issues. :icon_razz:

yea, my friend has one of those accelerometer things. not a cheap one but anyways thats why i threw in that those numbers were estimated. and the traction was a bit of an issue, the roads conditions were not ideal. i'd say i might have been able to get into the mid to high 15's if i didnt have to feather the throttle at first. i have a bunch of turbo junky friends that are trying to talk me into tearing it down over the winter and start upgrading everything. anybody know  how much the stock internals are good for? where i might be able to find some bigger injectors and what size i might use?

I'm not sure what they're good for, but if you keep your fueling/tuning in check, they can take a pretty good bit of power. At least one person on the board here has made 300hp to the wheels through a stock engine with only a turbocharger upgrade + tuning. That's about 350hp or so at the crank.

There are a lot of places to buy larger injectors. On ebay, you can usually find brand new injectors for a very reasonable price from a few of the "stores" on there. What size you need really depends on what upgrades you're doing & what amount of power you're going for...
