Title: Talk to me about front mount intercoolers.
Post by: meltboy11 on March 26, 2009, 12:02:00 PM
Who has one, are they hard to install? What about the piping? I have been running a lot of ideas through my head lately, and this is something else I have also been considering... So many mods I want, so little money...lol

i think im the only one that has one, i dont think it is really necessary unless your putting up huge numbers

my 302whp was on the stock intercooler, the only real mods were
5-speed
tune
gt2871
1.6 rockers
no mufflers

now to answer your question,

to install an intercooler is easy, size is the most important we have about 28" to work with width wise. my piping is prety nice in terms of install but the battery was removed from the front and it comes up over there. my intercooler is about 28x12x3.5" and the passenger tow hook on the front had to be removed to fit the piping. to do it properly your loking at a decent amount of money,  my piping uses no  clamps or couplers in the middle of the piping, everythnig is welded to insure a 100% tight seal.

Kuntzies setup really is awsome but but he's also using a holset hx35  on a stockish setup i would just use a FM intercooler with the in/out on the same side, that way you could use the window where the stock intercooler was to route the piping, find the appropriate bends and it should be pretty straight forward.

I like my front mount.  paid 70.00 bucks for it with a few 3 ply couplers and 3 J bends.  The IAT dropped a few degrees and I didn't notice any difference in my powerband.

ok cool, thanx for the info, I only really wonder cuz I was considering turboing my 89 and instead of goin through the hassle of getting a radiator, shrowd and intercooler, I was gona swap it all from the TGP into the 89 and give the TGP a FMIC.
