Title: Need forged pistons or hyper. pistons for 3.1L
Post by: TurboGTU on November 24, 2002, 06:50:48 PM
I am looking for 3.1 forged or hyper. for the 93 3.1 with aluminum heads. I am swaping the 2.8 on the GTUfor the 3.1 from a 93 gp. 2.8 too trublesome to modify without complete reprograming. ran 15.9 at Alamo dragway with the turbo 2.8.  chrome moly rings also.

I have the stock pistons from my old motor. The skirts are a little scuffed, but they are in good shape otherwise. These are the good Mahle pistons with the reinforcing band in them. They do very well in the TGP motors. I wouldn't want very much for them, maybe $25. Dunno if you would be at all interested but throwing it out there.

Why aren't you using them Chris?

This motor sat around too long and had to be bored. That is to say it sat outside in the weather in the car with the heads off and got water in it (don't know how but it did). At any rate its bored .5 mm over. I don't even know if the old pistons are useable, I have too look closely now that they are out of the motor.

Although, now that I think about it, that question might have been "so what are you using now?" If it is, I'm using new Mahle pistons. I requested them specifically, I didn't want any aftermarket ones. I don't think there is any need for forged unless you are really abusing your motor. I have plenty of guys with 400 to 500 hp Turbo 3.8's running stock pistons, one of which is an 11 sec car. I only know 1 with forged pistons.

But don't know the mm in overbore. I guess the one's your selling don't fit. So Mahle makes them.  Where can I contact them? Price? I was thinking of using forged 2.8 pistons and cutting the top and fly cuting them to fit the 3.1 with the aluminum heads, or using hyper pistions meant for 3.1 camaro/firebird and having them fly cut and lower in compresion hight.
Now that I think of it, could GM have recomended the Iron heads because aftermarket pistons were available for those. Or are the Iron heads supurior in strenth only.
What's my plan?
If I use pistons for 3.1 camaro/firebird, are the iron head better from a , 3.1 camro, fiero, Lumina van, or 3.4 camaro?
