I just took the TGP from Utica NY to Dayton OH, about 620 miles, and I got quite terrible mileage for the highway, only about 23 mpgs when I was cruising at 72mph... I get 32 in my 89 2.8, now I know it is going to be a little bit lower, but I wasn't expecting almost 10 mpgs less... Everything listed was done <10k miles ago...
plugs... went with stock AC Delcos, don't remember the # off hand, but I do know they were the recommended ones
wires... I don't remember the brand but pretty sure I just got OEM
all the gaskets on the top end from the intake up
ford c302 injectors
running the stock chip again since the topgun crapped out last year...
and I'm sure I have replaced more stuff just can't remember off hand... I run a bottle of octane boost and fuel injector cleaner every few fillups to try to keep everything clean...
stock chip runnin rich? do you remember your average mpg with the topgun?
Yea i fell you. My 3.1 6000 gets 28mpg in mix driving and i cant even get 20 on the highway only out of my TGP. It seems like the more of a grandma you drive it the worse it is, lol.
I really don't know if it's runnin rich how can I tell without an A/F gauge?
But with the topgun in there I would get more like 27ish on the highway at the same speed, 72 is typically my cruising speed.
Also my idle is all sorts of crappy while in gear, if I pop it in neutral at stop lights it kinda evens out, but in D it drops to about 7-800 and the car shakes, and today for the first time it actually stalled on me at a light. Maybe it is related to that?... but when driving it is smooth as all hell...
Not that my 3.1 Cutlass has gotten better mileage than that ever.. but you are running a stock chip that's not tuned for the 302s.
Oh!?! I didn't know it would have to be tuned for the 302s... lol
I know they're pretty close but aren't they just a little higher rated than stock? I can't remember.
Wow, I had no idea that would make a difference, that could explain everything

Check the spark plugs, if they are black, it's probably running rich. Also check the exhaust tips. If they have soot it's running rich.
Most likely it's because the stock chip sucks and the injectors are just making it suck more.
I was pulling 23-25 on the highway with our TGP on the built motor and the 3076R until the cam flat.
yea you will definitely need to tune for those 302 injectors-with the stock chip running so rich & those big injectors you are most likely dumping way more fuel than whats needed-id talk to flybynight or go to moates.net & get a prom programmer for $85 and get the $40-50 worth of addons needed & then you can tune it yourself from now on when you make upgrades or change parts.

I am getting about 32mpg with the 5 speed, Before that about 28mpg. I would GUESS that it's fuel related. The ford injectors and known for clogging up and the end result is poor fuel economy and slight misfiring at idle... :icon_sad:
this was in my mpg thread & i wasnt asking about anything in particular so im betting it was supposed to go to yours :)
Most likely just due to the stock chip. These cars were only rated for 25mpg back in the day. With the EPA change in ratings for 2007 to reflect more real world numbers, the TGP rating likely dropped to 23ish since every other old car was dropped by about that amount.
Is your x-over stock by the way?
ya its the stocker as far as I know, the car is pretty much parked for now anyway as it hasn't even been running very well since I got back from Ohio. It was runnin fine for a while on the 302s with the stock chip but it just doesn't feel right, maybe I will look into the programmer, or now that I've finally been back to work the past few months I could actually afford to send it flybynite like I planned on earlier in the year and just never had the money for it... :p
