If I wanted to put a new engine in my tgp, what are my options? I have to have the ablilty to swap the exhaust, turbo, etc... and still be able to run it on the stock computer and harness.
Im sure that a L82 3100 would be easy and probably not worth it. Just do a top swap.
Same thing with a LG8 3100?
What about a LA1 3400? I think the engine swap would be easy but don't know if the headers would work.
What I would really like to buy is a LX9 3500. But I know nothing about the engine.
And yes Im very well aware that all of these engines run higher compression than the LG5.
Any of those you mentioned can be swapped in, but each will have small details that need to be taken care of(60* board, etc. pretty much covers most of what needs to be done on certain swaps). Depending on how much stuff you could do yourself, you wouldn't have a whole lot more money in it going to a full 3500. In my area, 3500's are actually cheaper OR as cheap as the 3100/3400 since the demand isn't very high for them. $350-400 can get you a relatively low mileage one to start with...
I would personally only consider a swap if I had a failure w/ the stock engine. If this happened in my red car, I would highly consider a 3500 swap and make custom manifolds, x-over, etc. for it and go with a pretty sizeable turbocharger...
Here is what I've go goin for the 5 speed car. 1998 3100 short block, forged pistons and a custom roller turbo cam. Crank has been worked to remove weight with out affecting strength or durability. The rods have been polished, stronger rods bolts have been installed and the rotating assembly was balanced. I just got a 3400 top end off of a van, I will get the heads worked a bit along with the upper and lower manifold. I would like to use a ls-1 style throttle body but I have not got that far yet...
What are your plans for throttle body linkage?
Does anybody know if the oil pan from a lg5 will fit on a 3500?

Get the 3500 UIM....a lot more air flow, you may need spacers since the "neck" goes down so far.
Got my LS1 TB off e-bay $5.00.
When I swap engines from TGP to TSTE I'm making that change. (3500 UIM & LS1 TB)
Use the bracket from the 3400 TB and you'll be fine.
Ok but I want to get a younger engine so here's what I have planed:
Get a 3400 block
tgp heads (what do ya think???) or 3500 heads
tgp oil pan
3500 topside
ls1 tb w/ 3400 tb bracket
tgp engine harness/ecm (maybe megasquirt, ive built one before!)
3400 accessories

TGP heads aren't LG5 specific, fwiw. I'd stick with the 3500 heads and intakes.
Sounds good, have a lot of Patience!! Read "Juds" top end swap instructions and check out some of the other swap sites also.
I was extremely lucky to have Kenny let me do it at his shop, it would have taken me months to do it at home. :icon_cool:

Im really just worried that the tgp exhaust wont fit on the 3500 heads.
i have tgp exhaust on 3400 heads , you have to port them out a little but they work... use the tgp studs remove the 3x00 studs.

can't use TGP heads on the 3400 block, and it would certainly negate any airflow gains you were going for if you could. The combustion chambers on the 3400 are larger than the 3.1.
I don't see why you wouldn't just tap the 3400 oil pan for the return line.

^^^^^ Exactly . plus the lack of roller cam is the main reason ill never to another top swap.
