I recently purchased a 1990 red tgp 5 speed swap. when i got it the turbo was blown bad but the car still ran just smoke alot. i pulled the whole turbo kit out cleaned out the oil and custom fabbed a generic ebay turbo with a t25/t28 flange in it for approx. 225$. i got the car running and the turbo worked perfect but the wastegate wasnt opening. so i couldnt figure out why but the car continued to overboost and hit fuel cutoff. well i was driving around the other day and i over heated the car not paying attention at all i was more worried about taming the boost problem. well the engine is now seized and im not sure what i want to do from here. I can get my hands on a stock 3.1 for free! or should i pull the TGP motor out and rebuild that?
FREE is the key!
There's not enough of a difference in the TGP engine vs. a naturally aspirated 3.1 to worry about. A good running 3.1 would be the way to go in my opinion. It will be a lot more cost effective and less time consuming to swap in a known good 3.1 rather than rebuilding your seized engine. Plenty of people have turbocharged NA 3.1's without an issue.
So would i just switch out like Heads, Injectors, and intake out of the tgp motor??
I wonder if this is Kenny's old car... :dunno:
I would swap the entire engine but I would reuse the TGP injectors, oil pan and buy a NEW TGP specific oil pump...
While your in there you could buy a 8lb aluminum flywheel and gain a few extra ponies...
Ok i got ahold of a 3.1, Besides injectors oil pan and oil pump what else can i do to this engine while its out to either save performance or increase performance all together?
