Title: T2871R hybrid
Post by: flybynite on October 09, 2009, 04:06:52 PM
Well here it is, my new hybrid. Started with the stock center and turbine housing, had them machined for larger wheels. I used a 60mm 90 trim turbine wheel with a 71mm 53 trim compressor wheel. I have not driven the car yet, ran outta play time today. I did fire it up and bleed the cooling system...

Thanks guys!!  :icon_mrgreen:   I have well over 300 miles on this turbo so far, It spools fast and hard.... My lack of fuel has limited me to 6psi for now, but I am in the process of taking care of that...   :icon_cool: I'm thinkin some 30lb design III Bosch injectors and a 255lph fuel pump..  :icon_biggrin:

Where did you have this done?
Got a number/address I can send my turbo too or a price?

Trying to decide if I just want to dump it and get a different turbo or rebuild.
Rebuild is $300 to have someone do it-new one starts at 800+.

Not looking for 800+ right now with this build really  :)

Def,

I built the turbo myself. The parts were $550 and that included all the machine work and stuff for the rebuild. I have over 1k miles on this turbo now. I really like it...   :icon_mrgreen:

I'm ready to find a shop to do this for me,sounds like best option yet.
And I love that you've got it and i'm sure worked out a tune for it  :)

Just wanted to ask,I know it needs to be balanced afterwards and of course the machining. Did you have just a regular machine shop do this or did they specifically deal with turbos?
I might be underestimating my machine shop guy but wasn't sure if he could do that,or if something special was required on the housing machining.

He has CNC,dyno etc.. but I know we don't ever send any turbo work his way (ford dealer) and wasn't sure if it required special equipment.

I'm considering sending it to majestic turbo to be done, but can get a great rate if I can get some of it done here maybe and just send it to be balanced.

Also, you got a good place to buy the wheels from?
I'm calculating the injectors for 350hp,and just plan to run whatever boost keeps me around there comfortably.
This should do it and then some for track days I figure.

Any tips or recent fun quips about how much you love the mod much appreciated.

Def,
I had a machine shop that specializes in turbo upgrades and repairs do all the work for me. I just assembled the parts to save a few bucks. Both wheels were brand new and factory balanced but it's cheap insurance to have them balanced with the thrust collar. The center and exhaust housing was modified for the larger wheels. Not 100% sure but I THINK a mini lathe was used for the modifications. I would talk to the machine shop you use to discuss all the clearances so they can determine if they are capeable of these modifications. The wheels were purchased from a company in California along with the machine work and all the parts needed for a complete rebuild. On Monday I will get in touch with them to see if the parts are still available and to see if they are interested in the work.

Turns out I can't get any of the work done anywhere around here other than the balancing.
I have a friend with a dyno shop that uses Majestic Turbo out of Waco,Tx so I gave them a call and email.
Gave them your specs and my budget and plans,The tech is going to talk with his garrett rep and get back to me this week.

Upgrades and everything I want done will be somewhere around $850,so he is going to run the numbers and see if he can find me a viable option on a new turbo instead around the same price.

My budget for the turbocharger is $1000,not enough for a true T2871R (~$1200).
I would like to save as much as possible,as my total powertrain rebuild budget is only around $2000.

Adam,

Is this hybrid ball bearing?

He used his stock turbo, which is notball bearing, I'm pretty sure.
Just the wheels are different, and the housings machined.

Adam,

Is this hybrid ball bearing?

It is journal bearing. You can machine out the bearing housing and install ball bearings but it gets expensive...  ;)

Just offhand I think the prices from Majestic were $300 for rebuild, and ~$250-ish for a wheel upgrade/machine housing (per side).
This was sending them flybynite's specs on his upgrade, same wheels etc..

The prices sound good. I would make sure they use a t3 style compressor housing and a adaptor ring for this mod. The tiny t25 housing will not flow the cfm of the larger housing.   :icon_mrgreen:   I used a 3" in and a 2" out on mine..
