Title: Fixed the PMIII but have more issues
Post by: manifoldsrme on October 28, 2009, 12:12:09 PM
So I replaced the PMIII and the red brake light is off andthe brakes seem to work good. Nice progress. Now when I turn the turn signal switch on to the right the dash light just stays on, no blinkng. Also, there are no brake lights and a wisp of white smoke comes out of the column ocassionaly. My questions are:

could the turn signal switch being bad also cause the rear brake lights to not work, or are these seperate issues? Once I get the brake lights working I should be able to drive this thing!

Yes, a bad turn signal switch will cause all of those issues.  Usually you can just take it apart and bend the contacts a little bit, clean them and put a little dielectric grease on them, and it will be as good as new.

Did you re-adjust your brake light switch after installing your new PMIII?  That can also be part of the no brake lights issue.  The smoking from the steering column and non-flashing turn signal is caused by a malfunctioning turn signal switch though.

No, I did not adjust the brake light switch. Any info you can provide on that would be helpful.

It is talked about briefly toward the bottom of the page in the section describing how to install the PowerMaster.

It took 5 or 6 tries but I got it adjusted right. The brake lights work now. So next up is the turn signal switch. I have taken apart columns before and have the tools. My question is, what is the secret to getting the center controls out of the steering wheel? Pry carefully with a screwdriver? Where? Thanks for all the help so far, I am almost ready to drive it.

Exactly.  Just pry gently on the outside edge and it'll come right out.

New bulbs all around solved all the issues. All known issues seem to be resolved. Another TGP is on the road. Time to start the actual restoration! Big thanks to those who took the time to help me with my questions.
