Title: FS: Rebuilt crossover (x-over) pipes: $300 with core return
Post by: GOT2B GM on November 03, 2009, 07:38:06 PM
Hi everyone. I have a fixture for rebuilding the 1989/1990 Turbo Grand Prix, TSTE exhaust crossover (x-over) pipes.

The original crossovers have bellow style flex joints that cracks and leaks, causing a rich running condition. All rebuilt ones come with a woven style flex joint that is the industry standard nowadays.

Also, the original is encased with a molded steel heatshield that trapped moisture against the crossover, accelerating corrosion.

Once rebuilt, the heat shield is no longer utilized, with no ill effects.

$375 USD shipped anywhere in North America without core return.

$300 USD shipped anywhere in North America with core return. (Effectively a $75 core charge - I'd prefer to receive your rebuildable core rather than charge the $75)

I have had lots of seamless transactions with members on this board and w-body.com, so have no worries. All shipments will include a tracking number.

PayPal and money orders are my preferred methods of payment.

Any questions, concerns or comments please feel free to PM me or email me at mshantz83@hotmail.com

I am looking to have mine repaired locally. I was told by the guy that i need to get 1 3/4 flex section that is no longer than 3 inches. the shortest i can find is 4 inches long on ebabsys. Are you willing to just sell me the flex section or at least tell me where to buy it??

The picture is of a crossover I rebuilt this week.

Thanks.

The question is can you make larger crossovers? 2.5 inch diameter instead of 2 in diameter?  ( or whatever size they are)

I actually have a question: Recently I've had this exhaust smell come into the cabin after I stop after driving, stay at an intersection. I've taken it to a shop explaining that I think there may be a leak, explaining the crossover explicitly could be the problem, but they couldn't hear a leak, so they concluded there wasn't one. What should I look at to figure out if my Xover really is leaking?

If it still has the cover on it take it off and look at it.  Or on a cold start up feel for a leak.

The bellows on the stock crossovers look like an accordion. Over time the accordion bellows rip from the flexing and heat cycles.

Chances are, if your crossover is the stock unit with the metal heat shield covering it, your flex bellows are leaking.

Unfortunately, I don't have the equipment to custom bend piping to make a larger diameter crossover

I just bought a 90 red TGP with 115k on it.. I havent yet seen it in person but I know it needs the bellows repaired. Bad thing is I am right in the middle of dumping the Quad 4 in my 1994 Z26 to make it a 3500 5 speed. If you have one of these ready to go this winter, I'm definitely going to pick it up and I can ship the old one.

Long story short, if its an original pipe with the heat shielding in place, it'll be cracked.

Typical symptoms are: running rich, idling poorly, exhaust scent / exhaust leaking ticking noise emitting from under the hood.

Mine runs rich, ticking, etc.  The previous owner had strips of metal welded around the bellows to seal it up.  No flex.  The ERG tube was blown open in several spots and welded and blown open again.  I replaced it, but the threads on the nipple for the EGR were torn up.  Now I think it is leaking from there.  Should I replace the whole thing, or just weld the EGR tube onto it?  I don't know how important the flex is on it.

Sounds like it's been hacked up pretty good.

Bottom line, if it doesn't have flex bellows, it WILL crack. No matter how much you weld it back together.

The crossover's close proximity to the extreme heat of the turbocharger, means that it sees quite a bit of expansion and contraction with the heat cycles of day to day driving.

Both the TGP's I've owned came to me with bad crossovers, one was original and totally blown wide open, the other someone tried to weld cracks and bits on it. Cars never ran right without them sealed right. I'd at least strongly consider getting a rebuilt one, just for long term reliability. I did it years back now but Its just one less problem to deal with, totally worth it.

I am leaning towards a new one.  $250 is a good deal too.  This car is going to turn into a money pit, I can see.  I wasn't sure what the purpose of the bellows was, since the turbo is mounted to it and there shouldn't be flex in the pipe.  But heat expansion makes sense.  I will find room in the budget for it.  I've never seen someone weld a strap around the bellows before.  I had a feeling that was going to be trouble.
