Title: VIN lookup website that breaks down RPO codes, rarity, etc
Post by: mfewtrail on December 08, 2009, 10:27:04 PM
Rob(IRONDOG442) posted this on the sister board(w-body.com) and I figured I would repost it here for those of you that don't visit there as often.

http://www.compnine.com/vid.php

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to have any 1989 TGP VIN's on record, but it works fine for 1990's. The site has a record of 2,479 1990 TGP's. I'm assuming that this means there are actual 2,479 VIN's on file. The Pontiac Historical Society numbers from years ago are identical to what this site is showing = 2,479 1990 TGP coupes, and 1,000 1990 TSTE sedans. PHS listed "751" 1989 TGP coupes were made in the same quote set, so we can only assume that the 751 number is correct until we confirm it.

EDIT: Hmm, I've come across a few later 1990 TGP VIN's that the site doesn't recognize, but they are definitely real VIN's(carfax, etc. recognize them). This is making me question the validity of the production numbers listed there now...but I guess it just could mean they know how many were made, but do not have actual VIN's for all of them.

Besides the VIN breakdowns, you can search per RPO code if you need/want to.

http://www.compnine.com/rpocheck.php

Keep in mind when searching for RPO codes for our cars in particular, that some of them are filtered by coupe or sedan. Example: If you search for a TGP coupe, you get 2,479 cars listed w/ the LG5 rpo code, but if you search for a sedan, you'll see only 1,000 for the same RPO code.

After you do a search, scroll to the bottom to see how rare your car is, then post the results here!

Here are mine...

Black TGP: "There are 6 1990 GRAND PRIX 2 DR vehicles (0.009%) matching your exact options list. There are 9 (0.014%) with at least as many options. "

Red TGP: "There are 10 1990 GRAND PRIX 2 DR vehicles (0.015%) matching your exact options list. There are 14 (0.021%) with at least as many options."

I thought black and tan leather was pretty popular

Jon, the site is breaking down rarity by all the RPO codes(I thought the same thing as you when I first entered my VIN - see my post on w-body ), so stuff like license plate brackets and various other things are factored in there. I've even come across one TGP that has RPO codes that supposedly make it a fleet vehicle. By the RPO codes some cars are more rare than others. I think the most common TGP's I've come across so far had "133 cars" with the same exact options.

Black/tan lthr is pretty popular throughout production. I will eventually have the majority of the TGP vin's and come up with statistics about exterior color, interior color, seat material, etc.

Mine is a 90, red with tan leather, cd player, no sunroof. I will have to run the codes when I pull it out of hibernation in April.
