Title: what trans is up to the challenge?
Post by: TurboGTU on December 02, 2002, 11:44:31 PM
i was wondering which trans was the strongest?
3t40 the beretta, Lumina van 3 speed
440 t4 TGP's AOD
4t60 some 90 TGP AOD
4t60-e later year fwd AOD

hm282 early 88,89
5tm40  90
Getrag284 after 90
Gertag later year fwd manual trans

On Hot Rod magazine I read that on the Grand Prix GTP the 4t60 could only handle 300 hp and beyond that would be like playing with fire. That it would need a trans from a north star caddilac, but they dont work with v6s.

Can the 3t40 handle that power, around Curtis Walkers power levels. or are the Aods better. Five speeds? which one can handle it, or should I say which one is better than a MTX5 from a Taurus SHO. Soposidly the stronges 5 speed ford made for FWD. ( F$#@en differentals keep snapping their spider gear pins off)

The 4t80 is the northstart tranny. its not that it won't work with the v6, it won't fit in the car. The trans is huge. THe northstar/tranny combo is probably 3 times the size of a SC 3800 and 4t65ehd. Which btw would probably be the strongest automatic. The 125c or 3t40's are pretty stout too, i've heard of some fiero guys putting alot behind them. They lack the 4th gear that always goes out on the 4t60. FWIW, the 440t4 and 4t60 are exactly the same and the 4t60-e is pretty much the same except for electronic shifting, it still has vacuum modulation.

i think 5TM40 is just a Getrag 282.  GM changed the names on alot of transmissions around the early 90's.  the 440T4 got a name change to the 4T60, just like the RWD TH-700R4 got renamed to 4L60.

So the 4t65ehd is the strongest from the autos
The 3t40s are good contenders
And the five speeds are staute too, but ofcourse with a high friction clutch.

Now that I look at my issue it says 350plus not 300hp. ooo and that the 4t80 won't fit like you said Chris, at least witout surgery or talk to the v6's ecm. And it is 75lbs heavier--a no go for me.

So that means I still have room to play with. But it (Hot Rod) also said that swapping the chain and sprocket set from the non-supercharged GPs into the GTP trans is like chaning  from a 3.42 to a 3.73 final-drive ratio.
So GM changes Final drive ratios depending on application, I wonder if the lumina van has the gear ratio I want.
What car has the 4t65ehd?
