Hey Guy's i have a 1990 TGP Mclaren with 76000 miles , I would like to know where to start by adding more HP and torque in this already Small beast 3.1 V6 Engine
WOW, I am surprised that the mods did not move this to the performance section. But anyways, a stock TGP puts out about 205hp. With a good tune and an airfilter on the turbo you can get around 250hp. Next I would remove the cat and mufflers and add a resonator in place if the cat. That should be good for 10+hp. Next I would do the a/c fin mod and wrap the lower and upper charge pipes. That should bump you another 5hp. Now you have just about maxed out the 22lb injectors, so another tune with larger injectors is needed. That should add another 5-20hp depending on how hot the tune is. Next a larger turbo will be needed, a 2871r should put you over 300hp at the wheels but your 4t60 is not going to like that. I would use an external cooler with 30% more flow capacity than the stocker. That will help keep the trans temps in line. Hope this helps... :)
My goal is 350hp,some of the things planned are
larger injectors
bigger turbo
no exhaust
intercooled
water/meth
Cam
tune
no p/s
Ported heads,exhaust and intake manifolds
Emissions delete
Different or ported TB
That's off the top of my head.
350hp on streetable boost(12-15psi)is the goal,we'll see if it becomes a reality.
I'm going to try and stick with the stock heads/intake,not sure if they'll flow enough air though and I don't want to just jack the boost.
This engine will be in a fiero, not a TGP though.
gt2871R
walbro or equivelent 255 l/hr pump
28ish # injectors
tune
2.5 mandrel bent exhaust
5spd swap with Spec stage 3 clutch so you can put the power down without assploding your 4t60
This setup at 8 psi has dyno'd at just over 300 hp and 400 ft/lbs to the wheels (kuntzies old setup)
And honestly , I would not stick a Gen 2 pushrod V6 in a Fiero. The only reason I'd keep in a TGP is to save a bit of originality.
You be WAY further ahead with a 3400 or LX9 3500 and turboing that in the Fiero.
Unless you got the whole car for $50 and your entire budget is only ~$2000. :)
Then it's a hellova start :)
My goal isn't power at all,it's about 3rd or 4th down on the list.
The fact the engine is ready for more power is just gravy, and the good deal I got on it allows me to spend half of my budget on rebuilding/upgrading the powertrain and the other half on the turbo.
If I had gotten ahold of a 3900 car for $50 i'd be all over it right now probrably.

gt2871R
walbro or equivelent 255 l/hr pump<<<<<<<< not sure what this is besides a fuel pump is it external ?
28ish # injectors <<<<<<<< i can do this for sure, thanks
tune <<<<<<<<<< workin on this one i think from Adam
2.5 mandrel bent exhaust <<<<< started on this part not sure what Mandrel is.
5spd swap with Spec stage 3 clutch so you can put the power down without assploding your 4t60<< won't go there not enough funds yet

Thanks guys
no
I also thought you were going to put your tgp setup in a fiero

That's "DefEddie" that you're thinking of.
Yeah,that's me.
There is another guy that started to attempt it in a fiero, and gave up due to naysayers.
There is also mr. Jacobs over on pennocks who has one in and running (with boost issues,i've pointed him here for a chip.)
And another guy was attempting it,fell ill and is having one of the fiero swap guy's do it.
jacob is running basically stock, installing a manual wastegate control etc.. now. along with freeflow exhaust and filter.
I just need a new engine/trans and this fits the bill (cost=50$ for car,no title, rusted out) I plan to do as much as I can within my budget to get some power out of it but reliability is first.
The other guy is building for power i'm pretty sure, topend swap etc..
If you guy's are interested I can provide links to the build threads.
fiero + TGP motor= boss status

oh no i would never pull the tgp engine unless it was to over haul or something to that nature ,, i have a feiro setting in my drive way for the summer project , will be all stock 4cyl soory for the confusion
Well I'm new here and when I first saw the article about the turbos G/P they claimed 405 horsepower but heard when they went into production they dropped 'em down to 305HP what mine is supposed to have. Mine is completely stock... still with original tires from 1989!!!

205 HP stock...
i have the highest 3.1 numbers...
302 whp on stock engine with gt2871r, which is around 350hp at crank
396whp on a holset hx45, modded extensivily, on 7psi

Still no dyno sheet for proof.
I still can't belive hes parting out that car after all thats been done
has anyone even beat my 302whp number? NO... so who cares if i dont have a dyno sheet, but 94whp gain is not hard considering the extensive work that was done, and that my 302 was on a stock engine minus 1.6 rockers.
Im going to beat it... as soon as I finish my motor

maybe i have a secret to come ;)
uh huh you aways have a secret and it always amazes me. I still wish you werent getting rid of that car though.
Kuntzie were you using the stock DP on that 302 number? There no way my 3.1 doesnt make 300hp , not going to spend money to get it dynoed tho, rather spend it on making the car faster!
Anybody used the comp .440 lift cam?
I've finished cleaning/dissassembling my tgp engine.
Still have to port the heads and lower intake.
My big turbo will have to wait,as will 350hp-decided to reallocate my $1k turbo budget elsewhere.
I'll be happy north of 250 or around 300 if the turbo will support it.
Glad I decided to rebuild, bearing weren't going to last much longer. Mains had burned in foreign material and bad scratches/grooves.
This week/weekend when I get time my buddy is going to help me with the cam bearings and valve grinding/seats and we're going to throw the longblock together.
He has worked for years at an NHRA supplier/machine shop and knows all the tricks.
I will be dynoing when I'm done also.
Not because I think it is an accurate measure of power,I could honestly care less.
Mainly for tuning, but I don't plan to tune to max output either.
250hp is easy on the stock setup with a small amount of tuning. 300hp is reachable as well...at the crank that is.
Here are some old dyno charts from Josh's(twinturbosedan - RIP :icon_cry:) 5spd + stock TGP setup car. At the time, he had a 5spd chip in the car with very minimal tuning and it was running pig rich. He was running a manual boost controller(will result in instant spool with these small turbos and a huge spike of torque).
Chart w/ A/F(notice how rich it gets/drops off the chart)

After that, Josh had the car tuned again by Kenny(TGPilot) and picked up even more power. It put down ~230whp on a dyno dynamics dyno that is known for reading way lower than others. It would have probably been 250whp+ on a dynojet like he dyno'd on the first time around.
One of flybynite's cars dynod 267 hp to the wheels with bone stock engine and turbo if i remember correctly, 300 to the wheels is cake on a 3.1 with 3 inch DP, 1.6 rocker, turbo upgrade, fuel pump, tune... nothing crazy.

I will have the .440 lift cam,UDP,3" exhaust/no muffler, ported/polished upper,lower,heads,exhaust,water/meth,water/air IC,bored TB and I think that's it.
of course the car is only 2700ish pounds,so 1/4 time will be low anyway :)
And i'll also have nitrous in case I need it,pretty sure I have enough pills for a 10-120hp shot.
Already have a wideband and upgraded fuel pump. (fuel pump pulls to much voltage, fried my relay circuit so it needs rewired.
I'm think I should be good for close to 300hp with all this and of course i'm forgetting some stuff.
only mods i had on the 302whp
5-speed
1.6 rockers
gt2871r
rough tune
29#injectors
engine was still stock other then the rockers, oh ya i had a highflow cat with stock mufflers
