A few people on here have done the swap.  They used a Getrag HM 282 from a '88 or '89 GP.  It seems to be a pretty straight forward swap, since it's factory in the GP.

Go to Performance section, and click on the HOWTO for the turbo 3.1 / 5 speed.

why did you guys remove the  motor vs drop the sub-frame?  I am going to install all the hardware myself but I got a guy to install the tranny.  He said that he would just remove the subframe and go from underneath.  Why did you guys or the others listed do it in this method? shed some light.

i pulled the engine and tranny out the top with a hydraulic cherry picker.  it's a little tricky getting the automatic to clear the master cylinder but no big deal.  the Getrag is much smaller so it goes back in with no problems.  changing the transmission is really easy, i had never even done a manual tranny swap or clutch before and everything turned out great.  i thought the biggest PITA was trying to get the splines to align on the input shaft so i could bolt the getrag up (did everything by myself - not recommended!)  it seems like it would be alot harder to drop the subframe but then again i've never done it that way.

but hey if you did drop the subframe you could paint it with POR-15 while it was out....

I've replaced transmissions by pulling the subframe.  The reason I didn't when I did my swaps was because the motor was out already, so I bolted them together and dropped the whole thing in.

And malibuolds is right, aligning the splines on the 5 speed by yourself is HARD.  I'd hate to do it when the engine is already installed.
