Title: Digital Dash (no-go)
Post by: GPChief on May 16, 2010, 11:35:41 PM
Today I tried to install a digital dash into my TSTE. It worked but with issues. I took it back out due to these issues.

The issues were:
Once installed some mysterious stuttering / stumbling happened with the motor.
Could not see the MPH when lights were off.  Once lights were turned on you could see it fine. (note I upgraded all dash lights to LED hoping to solve this issue).

Guess I'll be installing a HUD...........eventually.

not to insult your intelligence, but you did check to see if the wiring was the same between the two, right?

i remember i swapped a digital cluster into my first gp, and the speedo did not light up without the lights on.  leads me to believe the illumination wiring is different

It's strange that the motor was stumbling after you put the cluster in. Aside from that issue was thinking about running a jumper wire to supply power for the speedo for when the lights are off. I wonder if there is a schematic in a manual that would help make a safe jump for that cluster?? I could ask the W-body guys or Have you joined GMforum yet I coud ask them as well.

Hehe,I ain't skeered to bump a 2yo post.

Just curious what digi cluster you used?
I've put one together for my fiero using a 95 safari cluster.
Did you just bolt in another w-body cluster that was digi?

Yes, it was a digital cluster from anouther 1st GEN GP.  Will be installing a HUD in the next few months.

I gutted a fiero clister for frame, then cut down the digi frame and plastiwelded it into the fiero frame.
Until someone else pointed it out though,I didn't realize the setup had no idiot lights incorporated and they were all divorced in a seperate housing that I couldn't really utilize.

Shelved it until today, found a bunch of LEDs laying around and had some ideas.
Just need to do a little paint and final touchups to prep the wiring and i'll install it in a parts car to verify.
Here's what I started and ended with. No pics yet with idiot lights upgrade.

Looks good.  Looks like a cutlass dash
