Hey everyone
First off, I want to thank everyone for all their help with my questions regarding my TGP.
I do have another question about that brake pump runs every so often. Is it normal for it to kick on if you are stepping on your brakes to a complete stop (pressing harder as you get to a complete stop) I want to say it is like 'riding your brakes' but it's not that. Reason I ask is that I have noticed that if I am approaching a stop and pressed the pedal 1x however foot is on the brake for a bit - I hear it kick on. Again, there arent any ABS, Brake lights going on. I just want to make sure I am ok :)
Again, thanks to everyone!
Nothing is wrong with that noise. It should come on almost every time you come near the brake pedal. It's just weird because most cars won't make that noise, but this is the exact same noise it made when it was brand-new.
Thanks Fred - I just cant believe they manufactured a car with it being as loud as it is - I guess that is what they did 20 years ago :icon_biggrin:
Put your ear next to the exhaust tip with the car idling. It's supposed to be loud.
Been going through the process of finding a ABS unit for my STE. Has taken a few months but I finally found one (a feat in itself) at a reasonable price. You can have them remanufactured by Cardone but you have to go through a retail auto parts outlet. Prices I found were between $1200 and $1600. I found a rebuilt unit on the shelf at B&B Auto Parts in New York City for $699.95. bbautoparts@gmail.com, 1-800-475-1227. Used are next to non-existant. Easier to find a car than an ABS unit. Mine is in the mail as I speak so I can't comment on the overall transaction until I get it and have it installed. I had them email me photos before I ordered as I have already gotten the wrong part twice from salvage yards. I think their interchange information is incorrect.
Your noise is normal because the accumulator is small and has to be recharged all the time. ABS works O.K. but this is a bad unit if the motor or switch goes bad. There is no redundancy in the design as with newer units. If your motor or switch fails you have almost no brakes. This is a Delco Moraine Powermaster III. Used on turbos because there is not enough manifold vacume to run a vacume booster. This works like the old GM Hydrovac units but is powered by a electric motor instead of a hydraulic pump. GM also used a earlier Powermaster II version on full size late eighties wagons with the 307 Olds engine. I have heard you can modify these to work but have not been able to find an authority.
I found 2 complete new rebuilt units for $450 each last year when mine went bad. Bought em both and have one sitting on my shelf in the box unopened and installed the other. Always nice to have a spare! I believe he has more in stock as well now.
Edit: just checked his website. None left. I have gold on my shelf! :icon_lol:
