Title: TRansmission problem
Post by: PhatMpk on November 22, 2011, 05:54:43 PM
Tranny will not shift into reverse or drive or any other gear except neutral??!? Linkage seems to be ok rolled up to a red light in drive and the trans will not engage into drive or reverse but shifts into neutral any suggestions as to what I can do?

would the torque convertor cause this or would the transmission itself be bad?

Before you get into parts how did this car drive before?  How long has it sat etc.

had some tc shutter for awhile, this car has been my daily driver for the past 6 years, motor was running strong down the freeway, came up to a red light after exiting the freeway and have nothing but a free rev after coming to a hault

the car rolls when it is put into neutral but wheels lock up and free revs when put into drive or reverse, trans would drive fine up to this point

The shudder that was happening prior to this could have been two other things though.  1 a failing transmission pump, and 2 possible snapped band.  I had two fail due to the second issue.  Not trying to sound stupid here but did you check your fluid level?

or If anyone from here needs parts I am willing to part this car out for the time being as I dont have the cash for a new trans. Turbo and motor are still running strong at 149k this is a California car all its life with no rust whatsoever on the frame body engine parts. I have owned since 92k and have kept up with all the maintence myself.

Sucks it has to be that way.  If I was already at my new job I would help you out and keep it rolling.  I have the parts to boot and on the trans I would rebuild it myself.  There was a transmission posted on here a while back for $200 you might consider if the member still has it I think it had 20K on the rebuild.

A normal 4T60 will asplode. I don't know how long it will take, but it will, sooner than later.

Do not waste the effort with a 4T60.  Look at finding one used through a member or get yours rebuilt or even beefed up.

What the hell...  That seems odd.  I wonder what was causing your issue then.

Some guys I work with call this the "car ferry" syndrome.  The car ferry showed up and now its fixed.

Lol I usually blame the curse of TGPs for any issues since they usually have an issue of some sort every time I get near one..

Problem was massive pop spillage and or debris which instantly froze the transmission linkage due to extreme temps, solution was cleaning and letting it thaw out

Sounded like 4th gear had locked up. THere are several stories like that about freeway run and then at a stop... nothing. Looks like you got it unstuck. I'd avoid driving in 4th.
