Title: Turbo slightly stuck...
Post by: Shifter23 on November 23, 2011, 02:10:47 PM
Hey guys I am putting together another TGP the was slated to be a parts donor originally but I traded for it from NTRCOOL and was going to breathe some life back into it with all my spare stuff.  I went to my parts car that had a factory refurbished turbo on it and removed it for this project.  Sadly though I noticed that from sitting the impeller seemed pretty stiff.  It still turns but only if you push on it and definitely doesn't freewheel at all.  Is there anyway to save it?  Or does this mean I have a rebuild-able core to add to my other cores lol. :icon_rolleyes:

Not a bad sign,  the bearing is probably just dry and doesnt have any shaftplay which makes it tight after sitting for a while.  I've come across this same situation, after the initial startup it free'd right back up.

I hops so since it is pretty stiff.  If it got any worse it would be froze I assume.  So after hot oil circulates through the assembly it might possibly free up?

yea , i just sprayed mine out , then some parts lube and it free'd up a little more... once i ran it on the car up to temp it felt totally normal.

Good to know since I have ran into them froze so I was hoping this one wasn't it only has a couple thousand on a factory rebuild straight from Garrett.  I would be really :icon_evil: if I couldn't.  But eh then again that is my luck on TGPs.  I can find them all day but when it comes time for TLC there is no love coming back from them lol!
