Title: Picked up a TGP
Post by: Heartbeat1991 on October 16, 2013, 11:24:05 AM
Yesterday I picked up a 1990 TGP. It's got 153k on it. It's solid, in running condition. But it has some quirks. I am very familiar with the motor, I've put one into my Z24, and I've put them in someone else's Z24.  The car has some brake issues. I'm not sure what yet.  Pedal is a little soft, and the PMIII runs every time I push the brakes. The pedal also doesn't return all the way to shut off the brake lights. The PO just did pads, rotors and calipers. I'm thinking (hoping) it needs to be re-bled. The gauges don't work. It needs a good cleaning. I did notice that if I step on it good, it kinda falls on its face, and smokes out the tail pipe like crazy.  The radio is locked. I think the steering wheel controls are supposed to light up, but they don't. Drivers window doesn't work. That's an easy fix. Seems to be missing the sunroof shade. Sunroof has a lot of wind noise. I have to play with the button to get it to shut right. Should it self-home when I close it or is that normal?  Any tips, suggestions, part sources, good upgrade suggestions all appreciated.  :icon_biggrin:

Pictures?  Mine had a lot of issues too.  It is currently sitting in the garage getting fixed, turbo out for crossover rebuild and fixing up the brakes.

Crossover is decent. The PO had steel straps welded around the bellows. I will post some pics in the next few days. I got home with it after dark last night and I was out of the house by 6 this morning.

Hey that thing is in great shape! Looks like your door panels need attention, I just finished mine, new carpet and a good cleaning.

It needs a little TLC.  I'm going to shampoo and re-glue the door panels.  I will have to find a rear deck piece.  That one is so burnt up it's disintegrating.  2 things I haven't figured out yet.  The radio is LOC'd.  It doesn't respond to any buttons, including the set button to unlock it.  The steering wheel control lights dim opposite the panel lights.  IE : when panel lights are off or dim, steering wheel lights up, when panel lights are on, steering wheel is out.  I am thinking the radio is to root of both problems.

Also, there is a little creative wiring under the steering column.  I can't see where the wires go without pulling the carpet out.  Is that possibly for the lumbar seats?

What did you use for carpeting, Gibby?

The color was called camel, it was auto upholstery carpet.  Our interior is called medium beachwood, the guy I went to for carpet said it has been discontinued.  So you either try to reuse the old stuff or find something to match.  I can get more pics if you want, I think the doors turned out nicely

Sure, I'd love to see pics.  My interior isn't beechwood anymore anyway.  It's pretty faded. My rear deck needs serious help too.

Yes. Do you know anything about it?

No, just curious.  I saw it advertised for a while but never looked at it.  It looks like it's in good shape though.

Here is some pictures of the doors, I still need to clean the upper carpet on the drivers side.  But I think the lower carpet fit nicely...

I took one of mine off and shampooed it.  I'm going to try to trim it and glue it back on.

There is a switch on the track of the moonroof with 3 wires. Mine has been repaired by someone previously but is a mess and doesn't work. I am assuming it is for telling the motor where the closed position is on the glass. Mine doesn't stop on it's own, I have to fiddle with the switch in the car to get it to close tight. I am thinking this is why. If someone would be so kind as to snap a pic of theirs so I know what wire goes where to repair mine, that would be spectacular. Thanks

i don't think the tgps have a self home, mine doesn't self home either but there is a loud click that i assume is the proper position for the sunroof when closed.

The switch is to self home.  I got a reply on the W-Body forum about it.  Perhaps your switch is broken too.

Did a few more things.  I fixed the brake light switch.  Now my brakes lights go off without pulling up on the pedal.  Re-bled the PMIII, seems to be working ok.  Although I don't think it's 100%.  Refinished 1 wheel so far.  A little progress here and there.  I also fixed the leaky fuel tank.  That was fun.  Next thing to be done is to remove the turbo to have 2 broken down pipe bolts machined out.
