Title: Steering Wheel Controls
Post by: Heartbeat1991 on November 01, 2013, 11:40:21 AM
Where is the control box for the steering wheel controls?  The lights on mine don't work right and I'd like to fix it.

Probably just the led's, there are two of them under the buttons

I need to clarify, they come on when I turn the key on.  They go off when I turn the lights on.  They dim opposite of the rest of the dash lights.  As the dash gets dimmer, the wheel gets brighter.

I had the same issue, its the dimmer switch itself.  I rebuilt mine, and all is good.

I saw your post about the dimmer.  I'm not very excited about that.  Everything else seems to work ok as far as lights.  If the rest of the dash lights dim and work correctly, why would rebuilding the dimmer switch change the steering wheel lights?

I also sent you a PM about the cluster repair.

I have not yet recieved the PM, I am not sure how the dimmer can affect all the lights at different intensities, but it did mine.  I was having issues with the DIC going black when I turned the headlights on, also my steering controls would not light at all, after a rebuild of the dimmer switch, all is well.  I believe I have a spare dimmer, I will check.  If I do I will rebuild it and sell it to you for the price of your old one... Just so I have a spare, if it doesnt fix your problem just send it back.

I thought I took pictures, if I didnt its really simple.  Some people just arent comfortable with a soldering iron, so I volunteered to do it for free.

So I found that the ground seemed to be getting shorted somewhere in the clockspring ( for lack of a better word ).  I had to pull the column apart to swap out a worn key cylinder.  While I had it apart, I probed the terminals.  Everything checked out ok.  I plugged the wheel controls in, and they lit up correctly.  After reassembling it all, same problem.  I found the ground to be shorting, so I just cut it from the harness and screwed it down with the horn ground for now.  The functions don't work on it.  But the lights do.  The tape deck is pretty shot anyway.  I don't know which end the controls aren't working from.

Good deal, I hope that fixes it, I have a rebuilt module now, tested it on my tgp and it works great.  Dimmer slider seems to move a little rough, but it all works
