Title: The Winter Project
Post by: TGPRobNY on February 15, 2003, 06:26:52 PM
The latest...The TGP is my new lift queen.  What a Bitch! It has taken hours to finally remove the oil pan which involved subframe lowering, motor mount removal, coolant draining. Jusyt amazing..so I can find the source of my knock. There it was the front rod bearing. During the repair process I replaced the coil pack with new Delco's, replacing the rusty horizontal coolant line on the lower right fender with a nice stainless one, steam cleaning and epoxy painting the front subchassis, and will order the new x-over, chip and will custom install a low restriction 3" exhaust. Oh I forgot, will pull the Turbo for new seals, and will clean the intercooler as well.  The engine bay cosmetics will include red powder coated/natural beaded valve covers, top plenum, and all metal tubes for air delivery. After completion I'll take pics and share the results. This is a 1989 Red/Tan leather 66kmi, #257 car. I'm just north of NYC and the winter is brutal this year so hence the project. Happy Motoring!

WOAH! Back the salt truck up a minute!

#257? How'd you find that?

Otherwise sounds great, what I wanted for my car just never had time.

Oil pan removal is a pain. I guess I'm just used to dropping the subframe. Guys at the shop joked about my brothers car, saying it was held in with pins instead of bolts! ;)

His started to get a light light tapping, dropped the pan and put in a few dollars worth of bearings. Very well worth it! The front bearing is farthest from the oil pump and seems to suffer because of it. Most 2.8/3.1's I've seen with rod failure are on the#1 rod only.  One was in the middle, but the rest in the front. Unless its bearing falure because of a bad intake gasket!

I don't have them, but its not hard to find. I used FM bearings, I guess you could try clevites but I don't think it really matters.

Federal Mogul or Clevites? I'll do some calling around tomorrow. Thanks.

Either FM or Clevites will do fine for this type of motor application. Good luck.
