Title: Turbo, Radiator, and Crossover removal
Post by: TGPRobNY on February 17, 2003, 03:37:43 PM
Hello again...The big snow has kept me busy and spending money. I pulled the Blackstone radiator for re-core. I'll let you know my results. Next area is the Turbo. I removed the 4 bolts from Turbo flange to crossover flange. I have removed some off the rear of the Turbo also. How do you get the bottom and inside ones? Also the lower rear exhaust manifold-to-xover nut is hard to reach. Any ideas? Should the Turbo be removed with the woven exhaust pipe..and can it be pulled as a unit?  Any help would be appreciated..Thanks.

The turbo can be removed by itself.  The woven SS downpipe is kinda big, which makes taking it out with the turbo kind difficult.  Here is what you can try:

1. Disconnect the oil/coolant lines.  Remove the turbo insulation and O2 sensor.  Remove all IC piping and air filter piping.

2. Use a 13mm wrench to remove the 4 crossover to turbo bolts.  With some time you will be able to remove them all without pulling anything else.  You may also have to bend the SS heat shield plate out of the way to get at the lower bolts.

3. Use a 13mm socket, wrench, extension, swivel, etc, to remove the downpipe to turbo bolts.  Be ready with the torch, you may have to heat the turbo to remove the bolts without breaking them.

4. The turob should be loose now.  Remove.

5. Use 13mm sockets, extensions, swivel, to remove the 4 crossover to manifold bolts.  Then remove the two lower crossover to crossover/transmission mount nuts.  The crossover should be loose now, remove.

All done.  You will have to get creative with the sockets, wrenches, swivels, etc to get at some of the bolts, but it is possible.  I replaced my downpipe to turbo screws with allen screws.  The allen wrench is a lot easier to use in the confined spaces.

Good idea on the bolt substitution. I'll use antiseize also. This car is a real test of patience and tool creativity! I'll try  Summit for new heat tape/blanket. Thanks
