I think the hose is a 5/8ths inch hose.  You need to get stiff wall hydrulic hose...stuff that won't collapse when it gets hot.

Also, one of my cars burns oil the same way, after sitting for some time idleing.  But my oil return hose is new, so I'm guessing it's my turbo.  Something to think about...

I have been thru this...I recently pulled my turbo for a complete rebuild and magnafluxing and seal replacement along with Jeff's incredible replacement x-over pipe and his oil return hose. I tried hydraulic but found it too stiff. Jeff has a triple reinforced flexible hi temp hose which is perfect. Also check the distributor blank-off plate for leak (o-ring) and rear valve cover gasket. I also found oil going into my exhaust from the bad turbo seals. Good luck, Rob

The hose is blue on the outside and orange on the inside. The same blue, orange hose can be obtained in diameters large enough for couplings from the turbo to intercooler pipe and coolant from and to the turbo. I also found orange colored coupling hose for intercooler pipe to throttlebody. They said it was used on helicopters for something, but it looks pimp with new stainless clamps.
By the way, there is more than one oil return line that you should replace.

The oil return line is one line 5/8"X10.5" long, the rest are steel lines!!!

No, unless the oil has not been changed fairly consistantly, the oil return metal lines are 1/2 inch on the ID so unlees they are sludged up don't worry about it!!!  :drinking:

Sorry, I meant to say that you should replace the coupling hoses for the coolant between the water pump and the turbo with the same type of hose

Hey, when you start the car, will exhaust leak from the turbo?  Is that what you are talking about?  Sometimes, and only sometimes, it emits blue smoke at idle.  I've added oil stabilizer and it does the trick for a while, but I started it for the first time in a couple months the other day and when it kicked over smoke came out of creases of the turbo.  Ever have that happen?  Is it time to rebuild?

Hi Ryan    If you rebuild your turbo, I can reccomend  Turbochargers.com in Texas. They do great work and your turbo will not only perform as new but look better than factory. They are detail oriented and have a very quick turnaround time. I'm rebuilding my engine and have the Jeff M xover which a thing of beauty also!  Good luck, Rob

Well If its losing exhaust smoke out of the seals does that mean I should rebuild it?  Sometimes when it idles the car smokes blue.  I don't know how many miles the turbo has on it.  The engine has 140k.  I know the turbo has been replaced cuz of the orange paint mark on it, like from a yard.  If I do rebuild, think it will hurt the motor?  Should I do both?

It won't hurt the engine if you only rebuild the turbo.  These turbos seem to have a problem with seals/oil burning.

I've only worked on 2 that had seal or bearing problems, it is usually the oil return hose about 98% of the time!!!
Oil smoke coming out the seals is caused by a restriction in the exhaust system called a plugged cat converter!

I'm gonna need another option here man, my cat's gone!  I'm thinking that maybe I should take it out, have it rebuilt, and then wrap it up nice with that shield from Summit.  How much is it ballbark, you guys know?
Title: Turbo rebuild
Post by: TGPRobNY on March 29, 2003, 06:49:10 PM
I had my turbo rebuilt by Turbocharger.com in Dallas. Mine ran over $700 due to a crack which required special welding , then polished the insides, the waste gate controller was checked , the fittings were polished, and the it looks much better than factory. I  also got the 2 inch heat tape from Summit with the stainless straps to hold it down. It should be wrapped to hold the heat. They will tear the turbo down and inspect and let you know.  Good luck.

My car loves to smoke out sometimes too. It will be idling fine and all the sudden it will just start belching out tons of smoke until I turn it off. Then i'll turn it back on and not a trace of smoke after that.
I think I found the problem though, the computer has parameters that protect the torque converter when the engine builds boost and the car is not moving, and I had a vacuum leak that I just fixed from the coupling off the metal vacuum line that runs from the intake to the tranny.

You can check for vacuum leaks with a piece of garden hose used like a stethoscope  and listen for a hissing sound. I could hear one of my lifters ticking also :x  :bad-words:
