Title: What size mufflers do I need???
Post by: 90TGP on March 12, 2003, 07:32:48 PM
Well I'm going to buy some Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers for my TGP soon so that I can get my exhaust done [car sound car, muffs, tips, and 2 1/2" pipe]. I had my stock mufflers cut off last year, so I don't have them on hand to see what the measurements are.

So does anyone know what the measurements and the inlet/outlet positions I need for my car? Or have a direct link from www.summitracing.com for the exact muffs I need?

Thanks

if you are running straight pipe then they are 2".  You will need 2" ----> 2 1/2 adapters

kinda shows you how much power can be gained on a tgp with  3" back piping.  right now we got a straw.

The 3 inch exhaust really does make a difference!  I just wish I could do something about the downpipe.  It's only like 2.25 inches.  Maybe when I finish the 3100 Turbo rebuild I'll start work on the 3 inch downpipe.  But, it will be for a T3/T4 hybrid...

so the downpipe on your custom is 2.25?  I thought it was 3" back.  If so BLOWER! what a bottleneck for you  :( !  The rest of the exhaust still is soooo schweet.  Wish I could weld  !

I'm getting 2 1/2" exhaust from the cat-back. I need to know what the measurements for the mufflers I need [length, width, height, ect ect]. I do know I'll need 2 1/2" in and out, but I don't know on which side I will need them [like in: left, right, center out:left, right, center]

I measured my stock mufflers over the summer as they are in dire need of replacment.  The drivers side was 10" long and the passenger side was 12" long.  They both had GM stamped on them so I can only assume they are stock.  I don't have any of the other measurements as I deemed them unimportant as there is a decent amoung of room every other way except with the length.  I've decided to go with no mufflers instead as it's cheaper and my TGP is going to mostly be a cruising/track car.  I hope it's not too loud as my cat is hollow as well.  I can get you the details on Saturday, when I go to work on my brother's truck('92 S-10 w/ a 3800SII).

No, it's a stock 2.25 inch downpipe.  The Exhaust opens up to 3 inches at the bottoms of the downpipe.  Then to a 3 inch muffler where the cat should be, and 3 inches all the way back.  I wish the DP could be a 3 inch, but for now this will have to work.

I want to run the local street legal shoot-outs the held every wednesday at my local track, but I need mufflers to participate, that and I want to gain back a little torque.

you will not loose torque on a boosted car :!:   you actually don't need any pipe, cat or anything.  all that stuff is just there to mask noise and for emissions purposes.

I want to quite down my car a little bit to give it that sleeper effect again, and to race unsuspecting victims [ricers] at the track. :)

I completely forgot about the 'muffled car' dealy with most tracks.  I think I will stick with mufflers and just get some straight through dynomax or magnaflow.  I completely forgot to measure the mufflers, but I can get the measurement for you tomorrow if you still need them.  It's seems like I'm forgeting a lot of stuff lately.  I've been busy this weekend trying to find a tranny for my TGP, and the closest one I found is in Massachusetts.  I'm making a trip there next Sat, but it going to take like 4 hrs to get there.  I called every yard in a 100 miles radius almost and noone has one.  I have to get it rebuilt then, and I'm not looking forward to see how much that is going to cost

If you have a cat then you don't need a muffler at the track.  Its either or.  The problem was mostly v-8's (high compression of course) running with no cat and not mufflers just straight pipe.

Ok, the driver's side muffler is 12" long and 8" wide with an offset inlet and a center outlet.  The passenger side muffler is 14" long and 10" wide with an offset inlet and a center outlet.  The offset inlets on both mufflers are toward the driver's side.  I would just buy two of the same mufflers...screw that different size muffler shit that GM did.  Are the dynomax super turbo mufflers a straight-through design?? I would just make sure that you get something with a straight-through design and not any of that baffled or chambered crap.

be careful if you use dynomax!!!!!!! some dynomax mufflers actually are designed to create backpressure (for high compression with no cat's v-8 cars).  You need the correct #/type of dynomax for you specific application thats why they are #'d 30/40/50 etc...  The worst thing in the world its to install a muffler that creates more backpressure.  Been there done that.  I got lucky and bought mine for $50 and sold it to some sucker 1yr later for $45 (used).  I would get lots of hesitation and when i removed it and replaced with arospeed bomb straight through it went away.

So would it be better to just run glasspacks or something like that? Since they are technically straight-through mufflers.

Those are tricky also.  If you look inside you will see the holes and inner chambers in them.  The exhaust pulse actually gets trapped inside (even though its for a split second) and hits the next pulse causing turbulance or backpressure.  If you will notice you here that sputtering on some of the imports with the cheap mufflers or glass packs thats the exhaust roll over actually causing lost off idle torque and decreased throttle response.  The saying you get what you pay for is absolutely true.  Thats the reason you will see the high prices on tanabe, greddy, hks, magnaflow etc.... They really do make good products.  I do believe though that some of the new glass packs have a better design.  Now on the top end the mufflers flow good because its a constant pulse.  Most of this isn't as bad with auto's but if you got a stick its very apparent.
