Title: Catalytic converter
Post by: pontiac92gp on March 18, 2003, 12:28:06 PM
Has anyone had their catalytic converter go on their car? Just wondering if you know where I can buy straight pipes (test pipes) for a quick temporary fix. Every place I go around me says they cant sell them and local junkyards say they cant sell them .. am I stuck by buying a new converter>?

Do you have to pass emissions for inspection? If you do then yes you need a cat. If you don't then you can put a straight pipe in yourself. Muffler shops are not allowed to cut a cat. off and put pipe in it's place. Around here they will put straight pipe in if you already have the cat. cut off though. Do some checking on that with your local shop.

Like he said, if you have to pass emissions, then you need to have one. Otherwise, you don't really need one. Some exhaust shops will do the removal for you, if you pay em in cash and don't request a reciept...at least the local one does. I just replaced mine with a straight pipe that I bought from an automotive parts store. And the exhaust was completely clamped together..so it was easy to remove :) :)

You should just be able to buy the apporpriate length of 2.5 inch pipe and replace the cat with that. They don't usually make any "kits" to get rid of the cat, for obvious reasons.

Here in CO you need to have a CAT for emissions.  I replaced my CAT with a "carsound" CAT and had the exhaust shop straighten out the piping to and from the CAT.  Felt like a differance in getting boost.

On my TGP I plan on having a custom 2.5 or 3 inch down pipe made with a 3 in CAT back exhaust going to a "Magna flow" muffler (thinking of just running one tip out of the back and modifyng the body so It does not look funny.  Dont know if it will ever happen though.

Random Tech also has good flowing CAT's.

Straightening out the pipe in front of and behind is a great thing to do..getting rid of those stupid "U-Bends" that they put in there. That is one of the best mods, not only for a TGP, but for any GP. :)
