Title: TGP Pistons
Post by: 85_sc on March 26, 2003, 05:46:32 PM
Hi everybody i have a 85 camaro sc that i'm taking the 2.8 and putting a 3400 top end on and a 3.1 crank in it i'm going to run a t-3 off a SVO mustang or k-Car. I was wondering how much boost the TGP pistons can hold i was thinking the maximum boost that i would run would be 14lbs possibly with a water injection kit to prevent detonation. Oh and for an ecm i'm going to run a 7749 with a modified Typhoon code. Thanks for the help.

The amount of boost an engine can hold is dependent on alot of things, not just a flat psi number.

On a TGP engine, I've never heard of a boost related failure. Since its a 2 bar map system, thats at least 15 psi (or 14.7 or whatever to split hairs).  I've heard of some who have ran more and had few problems, where there have been failures on aftermarket brands of pistons in a TGP motor.

However, your combination will have quite a few differences. The turbo will have different airflow characteristics at the same PSI, the heads will have a different tendency to detonate etc etc. So a straight comparison based on airflow isn't very valid.

All in all though the stock TGP pistons are quite stout and will hold up to almost anything the bottom end can. Like anything, if its abused, it will hurt it all around, pistons, rods, bearings.
