Title: reliable alternator
Post by: florida_tgp on April 07, 2003, 07:16:30 PM
I just got left stranded on highway with dead batter due to alternator stopped working, this is 4th time since 1996, so far my lifetime warrenty
has saved me from spending $$. I do get the 105amp model.
But i want one that will last, maybe the florida heat is the killer, i went to stinger web site but they don't seem to sell online. I don't have any added electronics. anybody have suggestion?

I found a company selling remans on ebay, $65, email him and
for $135, will sell a 160amp unit. If pep boys won't give me a free
one, i may try that. I paid $90 for limited lifetime unit back in 96,
i have gotten 2 or 3 free since then, lost count, i figure they will
stop giving me free ones sooner or later.

Nah, THat little AC DELCO alternator is the BIGGEST piece of junk. Too much in a little package. Heat is the big killer and its hardly adequate for the TGP power requirements. (50 amp fan, 30 amp Powermaster plus lights etc etc is a hard working little bugger). They really needed to upgrade to a big case 140 amp alternator. I don't know if the upgrades small alternators are any better, but the ice berg kit I put in my brothers car seem to be doing pretty well. It has extra large cooling fins so it may be enough to provide reliability.

I've been going to get one of those kits. Where did you get it? I know JC Whitney carries them.

Before I got my TGP I had a 89 SE that was going through them that fast.  I found that if the battery was not COMPLETELY (not just enough to start the car) charged when you first intalled the alternator you might as well be prepared to replace it in a yaears time. I replaced mine twice with the remanufactured ones until I trickle charged my battery over night. I also have heard that if the alternaor dies it sometimes causes the battery to be weak therefore the new alternator has to work hard and never completely charges the battery. I now have a custom 160 amp alternator for my large stereo system and It has been running strong with no problems
Title: Upgraded alternator

I have been wondering the same thing since my alternator is starting to crap out as well. I have been thinking of getting either one of the rebuilt CS-130's with the "iceberg" kit or possibly upgrading to the CS-144 which is apparently a GM factory 140amp alternator that was optional eqip. on some trucks. Chris, is this basically what you were talking about?

Check out this website where they sell both alts:http://www.alternatorparts.com/cs130d_cs144_trk_suv_upgrade.htm. Price is a little high but if I never had to worry about the alt again it might be worth it. According to the site it sounds like the CS-144 would be a direct swap-in (supposedly both the electrical connector and mounting bolts are identical). I might give it a shot but just wondering if anyone has done this before.
