Title: Nice idea..consider this option

I have my own lift and first I drain the pan and screw in the drain plug when finished  Next I punch a hole with an awl on the filter bottom and let it drain. Never had a mess.

To each his own method. I don't have a lift or an awl. I don't change my own oil and I don't imagine they will stand there and wait for it to drain.
This is designed to get it all. When you brake the filter loose you still have a little spill. You do have to wipe the shield though to get every drop.
