Title: PMIII install
Post by: olds1992 on July 11, 2002, 08:58:01 AM
I am going to be putting in the Reman unit for Prior this weekend.  How do I reattach the rod for the brake pedal into the reman unit.  Can i do it from inside the car with the PMIII installed?  Or does it have to be done before installing the unit?  Also, is there any special way to make sure the rod is insecurely?  Or does it just slide in and lock?  I alreay have the directions from the Turgo Grand Prix Garage Site, but I couldn't any detailed info on installing the rod back into the unit.

If you can separate the rod and leave it in the car it will be much easier. THe rod has a plastic snap ring at the end that will engage the unit when you put it back in. Its not super secure because there really isn't any chance of it falling out. But after years of being in there, it may be tough to remove the first time.

You just slide the PMIII back in and push down on the pedal. Thats all there is to it. Remember you will probably need to adjust the brake switch when you are done. Its a stupid switch really. I was looking at a cutlass that had the much better plunger type. Its not just a powermaster thing either, all the older cars used this silly switch.

Here is a tip if you are removing the pm lll. After everything is off the pm
pull it forward and use the two studs to keep it forward. You may have to pry a little. This will leave about a one inch gap betwen the pm and the mounting pad.

Here's the trickey part. Look at the brake pedal it should be near the floor. If it is still in the original position the rod is already out. If it is not out cut a two by four that you can block aginst your seat tracks and come within one inch of the brake pedal. Grab the pedal and jerk it hard hitting the wood. Now you won't have to mess with the brake switch which is
as close to a night mare as i have seen. The trick is not to pull the pedal all the way back.

Bleed the pm (all three lines and both bleed valves) before you tighten the lines. If done properly you won't have to bleed the brakes.

I just tossed the plastic ring, it was broken anyway. the rod can't get out.

The dealer would probably want $5.00 for the ring.

Good luck
