Messages - TurboGP

Hey guys, sorry to crosspost from W-body, but I'm desperately in need of a turbo for the TGP. If anyone has one, please shoot me a PM with an offer!

Thanks!

Swapped the ECM, no go.
Swapped the boost control solenoid, no go.

Got rid of the shitty-ass upper charge pipe to TB coupler and everything is peachy! I don't know how we missed this the first go round.

I also changed the oil today and upon inspecting the underbody of the car I found that I had no right side subframe bushing retainer   :icon_eek:. It just wasn't there. At all. Put one from Chris' old subframe on and we're rockin'! Maybe THAT'S why I had no torque and the car handled for ass. I can't believe that passed three separate state inspections.

the fans comming on when the keys off is in the stock programming, that usually means you didnt wait long enough to turn the car off after hot rodding it. Didnt you read the sticker on the visor, lol.

I read the sticker! lol I always let it cool down for a minute or two before turning the car off.

Anyhow, update:

Replaced the knock sensor. Drove the car again and the problems were immediately there. Drove it back to the garage and opened the hood to look for any possible leaks. Again, there were none. I made a comment to Chris that the ECM/Chip could be bad so I smacked the shit out of the ECM with a screwdriver because I was pissed. Drove the car home and it ran much better. There was a slight stumble but it felt more like a bunk tank of gas. I was low on fuel anyway, so I put 13 gallons of fresh 93 in from BP. Car drove a little better on the way home. It's boosting now but it doesn't feel near to it's full potential. Fans at key off still happens at random. No real rhyme or reason.

I'm going over to swap the ECM with TGP 1.0 and we'll see where that gets us

Sorry for the short story, I'm typing this up in a hurry before I sign into work. Last night, me and a buddy of mine were out cruising around in the TGP. We got stopped at a red light and and when it turned green, I hammered the gas. The car took off like a bat out of hell, but maybe halfway through the intersection, the car fell on its face like the wastegate just suddenly opened or something. There was a loud air rushing noise when the turbo spooled. We drove it to our destination thinking I popped a boot off one of the charge pipes, but the boots were intact and connected as they should be. All the vacuum lines look intact (aside from the ones under the plenum, I can't check those, but I'd imagine they're fine). We were stumped, so we drove home and figured we'd futz with it the next morning. On the way home, I got stuck at another light so I hammered the gas again just to see what would happen. The car shuddered slightly and then took off and hauled ass like normal. What the hell? Got on the highway and the car never pulled so good.

On the way back home, the car started the same strange air rushing noise and no power. Same thing on the way to work today. Also, is it normal for the Jeff M chip to intermittanty turn the cooling fans on when the key is off? I know my DHP in my Regal did this, but I don't know if Jeff did. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for when they turn on, they just sometimes do after key off. Sometimes they'll run for 5 seconds, sometimes they'll run for a minute or two. The cafr was previously throwing a code for the knock sensor which I'm going to fix tonight, but I don't feel that it's the source of my problems. What the fuck is wrong with this car?!  :icon_cry:

Hi there guys. I know I'm new here and I haven't really posted much, so I figured I'd introduce myself (and my car) to the board! I'm Shaun, and most of you know me from W-body as digitaloutsider. I got my first car in 2004 from my dad as a hand-me-down: A 1990 Pontiac Grand Prix LE sedan. It was strangely loaded for an LE with the full rally cluster, cassette with premium 6-speaker audio, 4T60, power bench, power antenna, power mirrors, power locks, power mirrors, and security lighting. I modded that car the best a 15-year-old could do. With help from Dave Wood (Gearhead43), I installed the Z7M front bumper (fog lights) along with AQ9s, VFD DIC and console shifting. Eventually the fuel pump died and I simply didn't have the knowhow to fix it at the time, so the car went by the wayside and I purchased a 1994 Pontiac Bonneville SSE.

The Bonneville was a nice car for a 17-year-old with it's many amenities, but I soon grew tired of the lack of power and excitement, so I traded it outright for a 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme International equipped with the 3.4 DOHC V6 (LQ1) and Getrag 284 5-speed. The car was fully loaded with AQ9's, HUD, DIS, ECC, etc. Soon after putting down one of the fastest DOHC 1/4 mile times back at that point (14.8 @ 95.01 MPH), the heater core blew and the old suspension caught up to it, so I decided to take the car off of the road.

I purchased a 1998 Regal GS as a daily driver and for nearly three years, I dumped my blood, sweat and tears into this bastard of GM engineering. It got more money and attention than I'll care to admit, along with some modifications (SLP GSX front/rear appointments, HUD, GP black leather seats, 3.29 gears, headers and plenty more). Around the time the third transmission blew (out of absolutely no fault of my own), I decided to cut my losses and move on.

Ever since I first heard of the Turbo Grand Prix (when I was much younger, we saw one driving down the street and my dad chased after it because we never saw one before), I wanted one. I searched high and low for one when I purchased the Regal, but no one was selling. After said car puked the last transmission, I started my search again. I found one about 10 minutes down the street from me and picked it up, a 1990 TGP, black with tan cloth interior. It was ratty, but according the owner, it only needed a little bit of work. Right... nearly $600 dumped into it, and it's still not remotely roadworthy.

The search continued and a member on W-body PM'd me to tell me that he was selling his '90 black/gray TGP, which was my perfect combination. I ended up picking it up along with a trunkload of free/extra parts. And well.. here the story begins!

Yeah, the clear coat is peeling on the rear bumper. Hopefully I can get them repainted at some point this year along with all the side cladding. The paint on the car is surprisingly nice. This was the last winter the car will see. I hope to have the Cutlass or some other beater up here by time winter rolls around again. The right headlight is cracked (I have a replacement). The driver's seat is also well worn. So what do you guys think of my poor daily driver TGP? Hopefully I can make this baby at least look like it did in 1994 or so!  :icon_wink:

Problems & Solutions / Bogging/hesitation under WOT
February 23, 2009, 05:27:00 PM
Hey guys. I finally picked up the new TGP, and everything's been great aside from one problem: When you're under heavy boost at WOT, sometimes it'll start pulling hard then hestitate/buck a couple of times and keep pulling again. When this happens, it almost sounds like a backfire/misfire and you can hear the boost rushing back out of the turbo as if you were railing on it and let off the gas. Frankly, that's exactly what it feels like. It doesn't do it all the time, and most commonly it happens around 75-80 on the freeway and right after a 2-1 downshift. Jeff M chip and x-over.

The stock upper charge pipe to intake manifold coupler looked pretty ratty and had some big cracks on it, so I put an aftermarket one on hoping it'd cure some of the problem. It could just be a coincidence, but it seems to be doing it a little less, but it still happens. R42LTS plugs according to Luke. Not sure of the age of them. I'll probably get around to changing them just because. Heated AC Delco O2 sensor. I went over the vacuum lines and everything looks okay, couldn't see any cracks/breaks.

Matt and I were talking about it last night and that it could possibly be the wastegate. Preferably, I'd like to change that as a last resort because, quite frankly, it looks like a major bitch to change

Any other insight? (and ugh, i'm so close to turning TGP #1 into a parts car)

I'll check into some different companies and see what I can do! Were the Jeff M McLaren badges jewel-type like the factory ones? Or were they just overlays?

Can't believe no one took this name  (I'm digitaloutsider from w-body.com)

Basically, I'm looking for one of these badges. Anyone have one laying around?
