General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information

DEFECT INVOLVED

General Motors has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in some 1989 Pontiac Turbo Grand Prix models (RPO Y92) built with LG5 3.1L turbocharger engines.

During modification of this vehicle, the turbocharger oil feed pipe was misrouted. The misrouted pipe may contact the positive battery cable connecting stud on the starter motor. This then could cause an electrical ground which may result in an engine compartment fire. To prevent the possibility of this condition occurring, the misrouted pipe will be properly routed, then a newly designed clamp and bracket will be installed to locate the pipe away from the starter.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

Involved are certain 1989 Turbo Grand Prix vehicles produced within the following VIN breakpoints:
