I just ordered a Transtronics Pocket Programmer 2!! :D   I also got a Datarase II UV eraser, and a socket adapter so I can reprogram the eproms without removing them from the memcal. 8)

I'm starting to take the auto tranny out this weekend and I should be starting the 5 speed installation by next weekend.  I'm going to order my clutch tomorrow, and I also have to get at least one new half-shaft as one has a ripped boot.  I can't wait to have a 5 speed TGP...it's gonna rock!!!

I'm using a getrag 284 from a DOHC Cutlass Supreme.  I was going to use a 282, but the 284 was there so I figured I'd give it a try.  I'm just using a stock replacement clutch. Getrag 284 clutches are pull-type clutches and are rated around 300 ftlbs for a stock clutch. Not to mention aftermarket 284 clutches are $$$.

I was going to buy a SPEC clutch if I went with a 282, so I would check them out if you need a clutch.  A lot of the fiero guys like the SPEC units and recommend them.

skalor, I may be looking at the wrong eraser but the Dataraser II says it's capacity is 2.1 x 3.1. If so our memcals won't fit, there 3.5 long

What is the p/n for the adapter so you don't have to desolder the chip? I think thats the only way to go.  :)

Congrats on your purchase. I hope Santa fills my stocking with the same stuff.

Grab a set of nail clippers, may want to avoid using the wifes set tho.  :)
Clip the legs off the stock prom and then pull the remaining portion out with a bit of heat assistance.  Insert an Atmel AT29C256 electrically eraseable prom into the now empty socket, and apply a bit of solder to each connector from the sides..done. No more UV erase needed, decreases programming throughput time to a level surpased only by an emulator.

You can even purchase an AT29C256 chip direct from Xtronics now, for less than $7 :

Check out this page on a couple different ways to reprogram eproms.  I'm using option #2 that involves making a 28 pin adapter from a 34 pin header.  That way you can connect the memcal directly to the programmer without ever removing the eprom.  I've thought about the zif/eeprom method(option #1 on the page above) and I ordered both when I ordered my 34 pin header so I can always try that out later.  8) :)

Option 2 on that page is exactly what I did when I was playing with the chips. Makes life real easy... 8)

Nail clippers huh  I'll have to try that. Thanks for the tip Mick. I was aware of the eeproms an will prolly do as you suggested.

skalor. Thanks for the adapter info. Reason I want one is to dump the 2 chips that I have now without removing them from the memcal.
