WTB CD stereo

Want to buy the TGP factory stereo with CD in excellent condition. No junk please! Mine came with cassett, and would like to upgrade to CD but keep steering wheel controls. Please LMK...T

Well just so you know, ALot of times these dont work, and when they do, they have issues like, they have to warm up or dont play burned CDs, and they cost insane ammounts of money to get them rebuilt, so it may take awhile to find a working one

Thanks for the info, but I'm sure GM made this unit fit several year models following the TGP...T

Yes, they were in cutlass's and others i belive, but that doesnt take away the fact there unreliable and cost alot

I don't understand "they cost alot", do mean that the potential sellers are charging alot, for a unit you all KNOW is unreliable. If that's the case, I'll keep looking til I find one that is a reasonable price and if it fails I have a guy that specializes in factory radios(GM) right down the road. Thanks again...T

There is a fairly high demand for ones that work right because they are rare and most of them don't work right.  Thats why finding one in the condition you are looking for is going to prove difficult.  None of them play burned cds because they are too old to, so thats an issue I've overlooked, however most either don't work, or you have to get them warmed up a lot to work.  But people want them for the same reason you do, they want to play cd's but also want their steering wheel controls, which is why they aren't cheap.

I got lucky and scored one on ebay for $75 that worked perfectly.  Now that I've had it 2 years, it now doesn't play CD's until I warm it up for a little while, but it still sounds great and works well enough for me for now.  But it took me a long time searching to find it, and the price I paid is abnormally low for a properly working one.

I wish you luck on finding one, it just isn't that easy to do, they just didn't make too many of them.

       Thanks for the good info, I've had a JVC 12 disc changer and amp in the trunk with a small remote display unit on the dash since 97. It's cool because the amp adds additional power to the tuner and CD when playing and I still have my steering wheel controls. Problem is there is a short in the system and I'm tired of always loading the mag. Plus, I've just always wanted the in dash unit. Thanks again...T

i've got a mint unit out of a 90 olds ninety eight touring sedan.  absolutely no signs of wear, just some dust from sittign in the junk yard.  works perfectly.

Although it should work fine with the steering wheel controls and will probably mount just fine and plug in with the same harnass and everything, that is not the same as the original TGP unit.  Just an FYI.

I've never tried to play them on mine, but I've never seen a factory cd player that old that would so I assumed it wouldn't....hmmm...should try that now.

Mine never had any problem playing burned discs either, both in my old Lumina and in the TGP (when the CD Player worked).

Same here.  The first one I scored out of a Bonneville SSE in the junkyard took forever to warm up and play CDs, just as several here have said.  But when it did finally play CDs, it had no trouble playing burned ones.  As dbtk 2 indicated, stockgp's unit will work in your car, but presents a few problems.  For starters, it's black (due to being in an Oldsmobile).  Secondly, it lights up white at night (again, due to being in an Olds).  Also, it doesn't have the EQs like the Pontiac units did.

I only have 2 100% functioning CD players (one of which is the design that came right after this one), both of which are in 2 of my cars right now.  I have yet to unlock one of the ones in that photo to see if it's functioning.  It supposedly was, according to the guy who sold it to me on eBay.  Even the ones that weren't working went for $40+.  People just want a core, working or not, just because it's hard to find and get one of these in the first place, so you can imagine what a functioning one would go for.  There was a new old stock one a couple years back that sold for $250!

You have to remember, this was an expensive option at the time, so not many cars got it (unlike today).  Also, they stopped using this model after '92, so you're talking about units that are at LEAST 14 years old.  It's not an issue of reliability.  Even if they were the greatest piece of electronics on Earth, how long do you expect a CD player to go?  It is for these reasons that a more logical approach may be to buy a non functioning one cheap for a core, and have that guy repair it for you.  Because let's say you pick up one that DOES work.  After paying $100+ for it, how long do you expect it to go for?  Wouldn't it make more sense to apply that $100 towards getting a cheaper, dead unit refurbished?  Most places I've checked with charge between $100 - $150 for a complete make over, including new light bulbs, replacements for cracked buttons, etc.  That's my plan, anyway.

                It appears the stack in the center of the pic are the corret CD players for the TGP.  Is that correct? Do any of these work, and are they for sale? Thanks...T
