Hi all. Just a quick question for our more experienced audiophiles. GangstGP? Was going to replace my factory dash 4x6's with an extra set of Audiobahns I have lying around but they did not fit! Little bit bummed about that because these are Audiobahns top of the line. Have a set in my truck and they rock hard! They are just wayy too deep. Not looking for brand loyalty or bashing here. Just maybe what you guys have installed so I can check depths. Figured I'd do the dash first then on to the doors. Thanks guys!

Boston Acoustics or Polk Audio for me. I have had both in my cars and love them. They fit just right too...not too deep. Sorry I do not remember the model but they were the best of the 4x6 either company offered.

The Polk Audio speakers Kenny is referring to are:  Polk audio EX346

They are sitting in the garage. Hopefully one of these days they will find their way in to the TGP.

Quick question, not meaning to hi-jack this.  So TGP's had front door 6x9's and 4x6's in the dash?  I've been debating whether or not to add 4x6's to my STE, since STE's and TSTE's didn't dash 4x6's.  I guess my question is, is the sound overpowering in the front of a TGP?  Right now, it seems as though my rear 6x9's over-power the front.

Nah, the doors and dash have 4x6's.

I've never cared for the imaging that the dash speakers have. My personal preference has always been the speakers in the doors, but the 4x6 size hampers the capability to get 'decent' sound from them. Your STE should have the component speaker setup in the front doors. I personally would replace those with a good quality component speaker set. The improved sound quality from them should help even out the sound between the front and back speakers.

Yeah, I've replaced the factory 6.5"s and 6x9's.  I've been sorta looking for tweeter replacements.  Probably do that first and see how that goes, then if I don't like it, I'll add 4x6's.  What I could do is get the gain slider to work the dash 4x6s if I do go that route.

hi-jack over.

I am replacing the oval speakers with high quality seperate components with a 3 way crossover network so the highs all bounce off the windshield and in your face for the clearest invisible soundstage/ 4" mids go in the closest possible location for a decent enclosure(the doors)/6.5" woofers in fiberglass pods in the back seat wall panels point right at the back seats for midbass punch. a center channel under the dash pad for the 5.1 ch. DVD player.

Thanks for the replys. These are the speakers I was going to use. Audiobahn 4x6 plates. As you can see, these are pretty deep! About 3/4" too deep. Notice the wood box they come in. They also come with real sturdy crossover networks. I think that Audiobahn uses oversized magnet structures for shock value as well as performance. Too large of a magnet could lead to overdamping/low sensitivity. But all in all these speakers do sound great! So, I guess i'm looking for a plate that fits. I don't think I want to use regular 4x6's. Never seen a really good one. GangstGP, you using plates? Thanks guys.

you should definately use those plates in the dash. they will fit there for sure. the door pods can be trimmed out for more depth so a bigger 4x6 could fit there too. take a heat gun and melt down the back of the pod a little. also you can cut a baffle out of 1/4" MDF board and that should raise it up enough for the dash area and the X-overs should fit under the dash too.

You know how to get the dash pad off?!?

GangstGp. Unfortunately, those plates don't fit in the dash. I've had the dash pad off and tried. You think if I build a spacer it will fit? Didn't try that. Thought that the dash pad sat right on top of the speakers. What plates do you use?
Haven't looked at the doors yet but was gonna use 5 1/4 midbass. Wanted to get the dash figured out first.

yea, cut a 1/4"plate or baffle or spacer, whatever you call it. then see if the dash snaps back down.  JL Audio makes a good 4x6 speaker for the doors. they make good 6x9s too.  there is Cadence plates in the dash of one of my cars. It came with them though so I dont know if they are smaller.

but going with a 5 1/4 is just going to be alot more trouble for nothin. the only way to get good midbass is to put them into a sealed 2.3 liter box or pod. otherwise pretty much all will sound the same.
