What did i do now

I have recently replaced the oil return line and was still getting smoke.I decided to take out the IC and clean it out with paint thinner.Turns out the IC was totally clean.Anyway,while i was at it i changed the coil on the passengers side.At first i didnt disconnect the battery and when i went to take the top screw out i shorted the starter.Then i disconnected the battery.Well i got everything back together right and now it will crank and run for a second but then it dies.It has that gas smell when a car isnt hitting on all cylinders.I thought maybe the new coil was bad so i put the old one back in.Same thing.I have looked and i dont see anything i forgot to put back together.Could i have shorted the ICM?ALso i checked the fuses in the glovebox and they are fine.Any idea where i should look.It seems like everytime i touch the engine in this car something like this happens.Thanks

One other thing i would like to add is when i turn the car back off the fan comes on for about 5 seconds and then goes off.Its never done this before.

Mine has always done the same thing....  that part should be fine

            Now there's that module right behind the coil packs,Try using your shop manual on checking your voltages

i would call ICM too.

You can test the ICMs!?
Anyone wanna explain how to do this?

Hmm I have a pontiac Bonneville SSEi i was working on doing the EXACT same thing, but a new ICM didnt help at all, Crankshaft sensor is my next thing to replace on it, but go to the junkyard and get icm and see if it works.

places like advance auto and autozone should be able to test the ICM for you.  I have seen parts of the modules go bad on one of my TGPs where only one of the coils was failing.  Good place to start.

Well,this is what i get for not disconnecting the battery first.I know better.Whats the easiest way to pull the middle coil pack?Does the starter need to be disconnected?I cant even see the bottom bolt for it.I assume the coil packs would have to come completely out to change the ICM?

actually you do not have to remove the coils to remove the ICM, it will come out as one unit, with the coils still attached to the ICM.  There are 3 13 mm bolts, one on the drivers side one on the passenger side, and one on the bottom. the entire thing comes out together, much easier than getting those 7/32" ones out, allthough its do-able that way too. 

You just have to disconnect the wiring harness and plug wires from it, then it comes right out.  I think its difficult to get the single bolt on the right side out because of the return line, but put your hands down in there and feel around, you'll find them, cannot see them from the top.  Maybe it was the bottom one that was hard to remove, I can't remember, but you only need to reinstall the two on the sides, the bottom one has been removed permanently by many of us, and some have even thrown them at GM engineers.  :laugh:

I have one more question.I noticed a very faint burnt smell in the interior after all of this.Could it be the ECM?I am taking out the ICM today and try to find somewhere that can test it.I am afraid that it might be something else like the ecm.

Hey. What's you're describing was one one of (MANY) problems I had with my TGP. Everytime I smiled after fixing it, it shit on my hopes and broke again lol. Anyways, this problem was cured, for me anyways, with a new ICM and coils. Do you have the stock crossover in your car? I noticed when mine was bad I could smell lots of exhaust, maybe that's what you're smelling?

Yeah,it already had  a jeff m crossover when i bought it.This is a smell i hadnt noticed until after i shorted the starter to what i think is the a/c hose that runs down there.I dont really see if i shorted it to the a/c how the icm got killed but i guess anything is possible,especially with these cars :icon_lol:

Perhaps it's two completely unrelated problems? LOL...not unheard of, trust me. However, disgnosing this one is out of my league. Sorry man, hope someone can chime in and help you.

Jimmy called me the other day to read this and I have been following it. I have a question about your first post. You say it starts for a second and dies. Does it die as you turn the key back from the start position to the run position or do you make it back to the run position before it dies? I have worked on Jimmy's car and can't remember if the starter has a few fusable links like so may other GM cars do if these cars do could one have burned when you shorted the starter out?
