My car is currently down for a Turbo repair and I really need a way around...so I was wondering if I could use a standard rear manifold and a standard x-over pipe and run my car without TURBO..I know i would also have to block off all oil and coolant lines.....Would this work???   Thanks Sean Lucas

I would think you will need the chip from an n/a 3.1. There are probably other issues but I'm not sure on them.

carl

yes that would work.  When my buddy got his tgp he had a block off plate on his x over

lucas_04

Yes, I also thought about a block off plate but I need to get my x-over repaired anyways....so i'll have to go non-turbo for a while...thanks

Sounds like alot of trouble to go through.

Q's

Your doing this because:

You can't afford the downtime of sending turbo/crossover out?

You can't  afford to purchase turbo/crossover?

My turbo is bad because?

Just trying to get a feel if there is anything I can help with, I hate to see unneccesary work.

you got a friend with a manifold?  I was told (maryland) that it was illegal for a junkyard to sale exhaust parts :?:   I found a turbo header (custom) and 3" downpipe all the way back when I had my escort in the junkyard and they wouldn't sale it to me.  Is this some BS or what

I know they can't sell catalytic converters here in Wisconsin.

To answer your questions ......First of all I am doing this because my car ran like crap with the bad turbo and the cracked x-over pipe...so I took all that stuff off....the x-over pipe is in the process of getting fixed and right now I don't have the extra money to send my turbo off.....I am gonna go with Majestic Turbo....for a little under $350.........I was thinking of running it without the turbo setup so I can have a ride until I get all this stuff fixed.....also I have access to alot of parts I might need....but no TGP parts.......If anyone has any better ideas please let me know!!! And by the way, where I live I haven't had any problems with buying exhaust parts............... Thanks.......       Sean Lucas

I think yards use that as an excuse because they get cheapies who want to buy a muffler or a tailpipe, or they don't want to deal with the rusty pipes and bolts. I refer to the crossover as a "manifold" and that helps sometimes, as we have bought plenty of manifolds, and they are exhaust parts. (a turbo is an exhaust part isn't it? ;)  So i really don't know the answer, but I have heard this before.  The pick it yourself yard has signs saying its illegal to sell catalytic conveters. I don't know what the reasoning is behind it though (or any exhaust part that would be illegal)

brandywine told me that.  kinda pissed me off because i have seen cars with only 3K on the clock which exhaust are brand new basically and can be reused.

It's illegal to resell catalytic converters whose conditions are unknown.  If their efficiency is unknown, theres legal issues, plus everyone would be using 'used' cats... and you'd just run into the problem of it breaking again soon anyways..

even exhaust shops have to hang on to your old converters for a short period as the government checks to make sure shops don't 'rip' customers off...

I believe the downpipe on standard 3.1's has a two-bolt setup, whereas the TGP has a 3 bolt 'header' setup on it, this may be an issue you'd have to have a new downpipe made up (or one made up with an adapter flange on it)  ...

I'm running a 3.1 turbo N/A right now, using a Cavalier chip -- however, as long as you've got no vaccum leaks, the car should run just fine under vaccum-only.  The resolution on the TGP (seeing as it does both vaccum and boost) isn't quite the same as it is on a normally all-vaccum engine (ie:  vaccum only engines can measure vaccum from 0 to 255 in computer terms.  TGP's measure 0-127 in vaccum, 128 is atmospheric pressure, and 128-255 is boost)

So why are cats so important but signifigant other emissions equipment isn't? I don't see anyone policing EGR valves or smog pumps?(not arguing with you but the law, just curiosity)

The TGP uses the same dowpipe to cat pipe flange as far as I can tell. From what I've seen, the exhaust after the downpipe should be the same. Its 2 bolt.

Mr. Mod Man

Because parts stores sell patch pipes that are the right size to the inch. And everyone recommends to do the chop. This gives our greedy government $-$ in their eyes, so they run stings on (not the people who chop their cars exhaust) muffler shops and junkyards who are working hard everyday to help people get their cars to run right and efficient.
