Connecting rod bolts

What is the name of the fastner used for the connecting rod nuts. They appear to be a externally splined nut and a Torx will not work., and the torque value? Thanks

I can't remember the torque value, and my service manual is at the shop so I can't help with that.  But the fastener if you are still wondering is a 12 point 1/2 inch socket.  It goes on real tight sometimes, but it does fit.

eclipse, tgpredny, I'll bet it's tight cause it's 13mm which is .011 larger than your 1/2 in socket. I love it, :lol: what ever works use it. I'll bet it's hard to get the nut out of the socket.  :(

Torque is 39 foot # for rods and 73 foot # for mains.

Don't think they made external torit? I wish they never made internal.

Yeah, that sounds about right.  I only had english for 12 pt sockets, but the nuts came out of the socket ok for me.  :)

Thanks guys!  Everyone has been helpful. The nut is 13mm 12 point. Why I didn't recognize it must be due to old age!. Anyway, I pulled bearing caps and found no1 the cause. All the others showed mimimal wear with no patterns and the crank still has a nice mirror finish. So new bearings it is and then updates later on. Thanks again, Rob

Did the shavings/metal peices make it far throughout the engine?  Make sure you clean that engine VERY good, because those shavings/metal peices will destroy your new bearings quickly.  Maybe change the oil/filter every 100 miles or so for the first 500 miles?

Yeah Definately! always do that during re-builds. The strainer caught alot and really I caught the intial bearing spin..real lucky. The pump will be cleaned to as well as all oil passages. Also thinking of installing MSD coils..and ideas or sources? Thanks again

I highly doubt you will see any gains with the MSD coils. The GM coils are good enough for these cars.
