Title: K&N Filters
Post by: grinders_18 on February 03, 2008, 06:43:36 PM
Ok, I've read all the topics, and gotten close to a dozen different part/filter numbers, but what is the right size to use? The one on my turbo is pretty beat, and another recharge won't help that fact that it's pretty much wrecked. I brought it into Advance Auto and they can't match any of the numbers on the filter to any current K&N filters...and yes it is a K&N, says so on the end of it.

There are so many filters to choose from Kyle.  It all depends on how big you want it, and at which angle you want it mounted to the turbo (ie. they have them in 20*, 10* etc bends)  Measure how big you want it and pick the angle you think will fit best.  There are pics of the different angles in the other K&N thread.

move your coolant tank like I did and use the filter I did, I love the way it looks.  Also AJUSA.com has the cheapest prices on K&Ns that I've found.

I use the RU-1390.

Installed on the car.

It was really close to the intercooler installed like that, so I angled it upwards a bit by flipping it so that the bottom of the filter is facing upwards toward the hood. The filter never made contact with it the other way around since my mounts are in good shape. I didn't flip it because I was worried about the filter making contact. I just happened to turn it around a different way when installing it and started putting it back on the same way every time I removed it to clean it or work on the car.

Here's a picture showing how I currently have it angled upwards.

By the way, pick up a t-bolt style clamp or you'll eventually eat up the rubber base of the filter with a worm gear drive clamp. You can get away with a worm gear drive clamp, but you shouldn't tighten it very much. It doesn't take much to hold the filter on.

I think I have the same as Matt, and mine is getting chewed/sliced around the base due to a worm-gear clamp :-/

Also, the coolant tank cap will start to chew through the filter. Either move the tank or find a bend to attached between the filter and turbo to angle it away.

Advance Auto doesn't carry the T-bolt clamps, just the worm gear clamps. Do you know where I can find the T-bolt clamps?

Thanks! Oh, and, any particular size I should be watching for?

measure your air filter outlet ID

another cheaper option for a clamp is a silicon hose clamp. It looks just like a worm screw clamp except it has a solid section of clamp running on the inside so the rubber doesn't come in contact with the holes of the clamps. A good parts store will know what they are there used for silicon hoses. The local napa had them in stock but the one guy didn't know what they were after I sent one over the other guys knew he had them in stock. cost is very close to a regular worn clamp.

What are you guys going to do about the crank case ventilation? From the factory the TGP had 2 ways to evacuate crank case pressures. By just putting the air filter on the turbo you are not utilizing both of them. This can create higher then normal crank case pressures, and will lead to blow by and oil consumption even from lower mileage cars...  Here's what I did to resolve the problem.

.....you just left the stock piece in there?

I put an aftermarket air breather there.

I'm curious about your air intake set up...what's the route it follows?

Yes, I used the stock rubber hose that went to the air box. Then I installed a 1 way check valve and a rubber hose to the intake pipe. The intake pipe is a piece of 2.5" muffler pipe that locates the air filter under the car by the transmission lines. I have driven this set up in the rain with no issues at all. Sounds wicked to, it echos off the road when boosting. I also noticed a difference in power. I'm sure everybody here knows how hot it can get under the hood of a TGP. With the air filter on the turbo all your doing is sucking up hot air and that robs horsepower.   :icon_twisted:   Now thats no fun is it.

Here's what I used. A modified LH0 breather tube and piece of hose.

I just have a breather on my car for now. You won't have a problem with a breather(other than oil dripping off of it if you have a lot of blowby) or routing the tube back into your air filter setup. The only reason that tube is routed to the air intake is for emissions purposes. The blowby gases(and slight oil accumulation which is present on even the lowest mileage engines) are meant to be drawn into the engine again and reburned. The breather just vents them to the atmosphere instead. My 74K mile never builds up so much as a drop of oil on the breather by the way. I do plan on eventually removing the breather and running a hose to my K&N filter OR some tubing like you did Adam(soon as I move that pesky coolant bottle).

That's not bad since they can probably get it next day for you....but AJUSA.com is still cheaper @ $27.66 shipped to your door for that filter. ;)

Flybynite, I sent you a PM about capping that tube. Sorry I'm so impatient that I had to resurrect this thread just to let you know.
