So, as most of you know, I traded my old Jimmy for a TGP. I spent all of $50 getting it running, but still had the issue of the tranny having no first gear (which I was fully aware of when I got it). So, finally yesterday my buddy (who has an engine lift) came up for the weekend, we tore into everything, and at about 1:30am this morning we had the engine and tranny free. Today we pulled the turbo off, as well as the crossover and basically everything else turbo related, separated the transmission from the engine, and set them both down to be cleaned up. I have a spare tranny to be put it, which is a supposed good one pulled from a parts car, so hopefully that's correct when we put it in, but the plan for the next week or so is to clean all the crap on the engine and in the engine bay, get a bunch of parts that need replacing (motor mount, various o-rings and hoses, etc) and get things ready to drop back in the next time I have a free weekend and can get the engine lift and a spare set of hands.
Here are a few pics from last night. The only difference today is that the garage is cleaned up, and the engine and tranny are on the floor between the garage door and the car

I'll merge another post here, as well, since no one seems to be answering it on W-body (at least not in the powertrain section):

So, got the engine and tranny all pulled out, ready to be cleaned and everything fun like that. I have a bit of money to spend (not a ton, but enough to replace some things) and am starting a list, hopefully to order/buy things in another week or so. Feel free to add to the list, or ask about anything
-Fuel line O-rings
-Oil drive O-ring
-stainless bolts for turbo (and some other stainless bolts)
-some rubber hose, since it's cheap. I'll just redo whatever when I see it
-probably some new wire loom
-new lower motor mount, mine was completely destroyed
I'm sure I'm forgetting some things, but I feel like crap and cant think right now
The fun never ends does it?
Here are a couple of pictures of a 6000 wagon I am playing with now...much easier this way! ;)
Also a couple of high HP FORDs I am playing with. The twin turbo (Black Mustang) will be in the neighborhood of 800+ wheel HP when finished.
Looks like the HP twin turbo kit for the terminators :) Looks like fun Kenny!
Loving that turbo 6000, I'd rock that anyday.
Yea, this is the way me and TGPvsTIII did it, when we swap to the 5speed. This way you get to change everything you've always wanted. Much easier
That's a clean engine in that 6000. :icon_mrgreen:
well, been extremely busy so I haven't done much since we pulled the engine. Tonight I did a little degreasing of the engine bay, and I decided to pull the upper intake, both because I need to regasket it anyways, but I painted it black, and started sanding down all the raised parts. I have new valve cover gaskets as well, so that'll get done too. I need to get a new engine mount and otherwise basically finish cleaning the engine and engine bay. Ken and I are thinking either the first or third weekend in april we'll throw her back together, and I'll move on to other maintenance at that point (plugs, wires, sensors, etc).
Im moving back up to michigan either the first or second weekend in may, so I mostly just want/need her back together and running so I can hopefully drive her home and have the cutlass on a trailer behind the parents avalanche. That way, if something happens to the TGP, swap it to the trailer and drive the cutty.
Anyone have suggestions for cleaning up the wires and such? I'm, thinking I might get some new loom, junk all the old stuff, and pretty much degrease all the wiring I can get to and reloom it all.
Bought an electric drill at work for $20, clearenced because it was the display model (i think it was originally $60 or so), so i spent just a few minutes with the plenum:
I accidentally caught a bit on the rear right, so I'll just mask it and give it a quick spray, but this is so far, not done, but closer
Helping Ken with his crap tomorrow, but next weekend we're going to tag team the TGP, and get the engine in thursday night/friday, and hopefully have everything all buttoned up by friday night. Then I get to help him go to ohio to pick up some crap of his.
So, point being, next weekend she should be back together, I just have to remember to stop by autozone or similar to get a few things
Plans didn't go quite accordingly, since we had to abandon Thursday's plan and most of Friday's, but we did get a few hours in Friday night, spent all day Saturday picking up a car and a TGP engine for him in Ohio, driving back in the middle of the night. We got back to my place at around 10am, on basically no sleep, so we took a 2 or 3 hour nap, and then went to town on it, and got the engine/tranny all back together, and mounted back into the car. We didn't do anything past bolting the tranny and engine mount on, but from here on out it's basically reassembly, most of which I can handle on my own.
She lives! Got her all back together tonight, and she fired right up. Not even a check engine light! Only problem we had was the fact that the only thing we forgot was to tighten the power steering line right at the bottom of the pump. Otherwise she runs great, and fast! She shifts into gear kinda hard, but I know my top mounts are all completely shot
thats great news!
she still hesitates a bit until warm, but I think a lot of it has to do with bad gas and an old fuel filter. Have that ready to go on next weekend, as well as new front pads. I drove her a few times last night, and then for about a half hour this evening, just to kinda feel out how she's going to do. she runs damn near perfect, except I need new dogbones, and for some reason the temp guage never gets abouve about 130*. Anyone have any idea what that's all about?
The thermostat is probably stuck open. Get a new one from the local auto parts store, they are only $5.

what's weird is that if it's stuck open, it's only been stuck open since after we fired her up a few times last night  She definitely got hot the first few runs, but then I noticed the last time last night and today that she doesn't. I'll pick up a new one anyways, takes all of 5 minutes to swap anyways.
My GP SE was doing the same thing when I got it. If you let it idle for a few minutes, it would get good and warm (210 or so), but if you went and drove it, it would only get just a hair above 100*. New T-stat fixed it.
For less than 5 minutes and $5, you really can't go wrong.
yeah, I'll grab one this week and try that. I wish I would have kept the cuttys old one and i could just use that
Talk with the guy that set your car up. He might have set up the chip for a lower temp thermostat then normal. So make sure you confer with him first.

I know the old Tstat had a tiny hole in it, so it may be a 180* Tstat. I should still hvae it, so I'll talk with him and save it, but I put a regular 195 in for now
EDIT: looks good!
Horrible picture, but you can believe me now!!! We put on a coolant bottle from a later car so it's not underneath a bunch of crap. this picture was today after I finally bolted the battery back in and put the washer bottle back on
(http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k139/Psych0matt/tgp31.jpg)
Sweet! :thumb:
Any pics of the new coolant lines from the new bottle? And what car did you swipe the new bottle from?
I believe 91-93 GP and CS came with that coolant bottle. Not sure of the other W's.
Didn't someone else do this? I;m looking for the pics to see how I could do this. Did you have to move anything under the shroud or did it fit fine?
it fit fine, although we had to drill a hole on the strut tower to put a bolt on, but that's it. We stole the hose from the TGP stock bottle, and it was long enough to go up to the radiator cap, well actually way too long, but i just ran it around the neck a few times til I can trim it right. the hose just comes off the front of the bottle and connects to the cap, that's all. Oh, and either drill a hole in the strut brace bar, or get one with a predrilled hole to mount it, but that's all it takes
We took it from the 93 international that Ken is stashing at my house for now
Matt (93luminaZ34) had one when he posted up pics of his TGP pretty recently. That particular coolant bottle is supposed to replace the "beauty shroud" that we have on our TGPs.
hmmm, I dont think mine had the beauty shroud on it before... Maybe that's why I think this bottle looks better, hiding the computer and such :icon_lol:
EDIT: Nope, it didn't, so this serves two purposes: hiding the computer and such, and being a ton more easily accesible

It also frees up room for a bit better intake than just a filter slapped on the turbo. ;) I'm going to remove the stock overflow on mine later this week and install a 91-93 style overflow bottle.
Hmm I thought I was the only one running that coolant bottle ;) nice choice :icon_idea:

Ken
ya that came on a lot of Ws I know my moms regal has one, my dads lumina had one, and i think my old cutlass had one... you will not have a hard time finding one, I have actually been wanting to put one in my car as well for the longest time... lol
I think I started that trend some years ago with the coolant bottle relocation. I also have it on mine, did mine some 3 years ago I beleive.

Of course my engine looks alot better now, with FFP mounts, 3800 injectors, cleaned plenum, ceramic coated valve covers, newly rebuilt x-over, and other such stuff.

Show some new pics then...or I don't believe you lol.
That would require me taking the car out of storage, which isnt happening until June, and unburying it from the storage bins under it, taking the jack stands out, and all that other garbage..
I got pics of the stuff thou if your interested LOL..
This is how my car looked BEFOR I put everything back into the storage locker last year...

Dear God....I think I cried a little. LOL
The coolant bottle relocation has been around for a long time. I have pictures of a red TGP that had that coolant bottle swapped in back in 2001 or 2002. I only remember THAT particular car because I was in contact with the owner and was going to buy it, but could not drive all the way across the country to get it at that time.
PS: My red car will be 91-93 coolant bottle swapped later this week. It looks crappy under the hood without the beauty cover and I want to make room for an intake where the stock overflow is now.
just thought I'd update this a bit.
Been working over 60 hours a week the past two weeks, this week, and next, so I've been quite occupied, but should be back to 40 or so soon (racked up about 76 hours last week)
Registered the TGP last week and have been driving her since, mostly because the cutlass is having VSS problems, as well as the ac compressor about to seize up, and I havent had time to fix it (see my hours for last week  ). I drove her over 800 miles this weekend, which was kinda nuts seeing that I haven't driven it more than about 15 miles at a time since I got her all back together. Hopefully this weekend I'm gonna wash both up, get the cutty back to normal, and maybe even get some pics at the new place.
Moral of the story: The TGP is proving to be incredibly reliable (and soooooooooo comfortable for trips)
great news!

QFT!
found my culprit for slamming into reverse, the vac line from the modulator to the check valve. got a new valve and some new hose and it no longer shifts hard, such a relief. also she has new dogbones on :icon_cool:
However, now I'm noticing 3rd gear is having an incredibly hard time engaging. 1st and 2nd are pretty darn good, so it's kinda confusing as to why 3rd would be doing this. I want/should replace the filter again, since I've been running this filter for a month or so since the swap
Sounds like my tranny when it was on its way out. I had run with a bad vac modulator for so long it took its toll on my tranny.

is the modulator something relatively easy to swap out? or is it fairly extensive?
It is pretty easy, the modulator is on the outside of the transmission.
The toughest part is finding it if you have a ton of grease buildup. 1/2 inch bolt on the left side, I believe...remove the sensor for the tranny that sits nearby the modulator...makes it easier to turn the wrench.

been a while since I updated, but I did replace the modulator, with a little difficulty. The shaft part, or whatever you call the center pin type thing, pulled out of the old one and stuck inside, so i had to basically tug it out with needle nose pliers. Got the new one back in no problem, but still the same problems, it's basically decent in first, slight hesitation into 2nd, but basically doesn't catch 3rd until i get up enough momentum for it to drop in, and OD drops in fine. I think I'm just going to hunt down a 5 speed and attempt that, even though I wanted to run the auto for a while :icon_confused: I just don't know when I'll have the time to do it, and I don't want her just sitting for too much of an extended period
